If you're looking for an affordable studio who will listen to your tracks, actually speak his mind and try to elevate the songs to higher levels, you could consider working with me. A studio owner for two years, with 3 years of mixing experience (specialised in metal, old school metal and rock music), I won't spare any effort to help you.

As a musician myself, I will be able to think with you about your songs not only in the technical sense (mixing, mastering) but also try to improve it in the musical sense. One of the things I value in music is for it to sound natural, and bring out the performances of the individual musicians. As opposed to try to create at track which sounds as much as possible like existing songs.

As I've said in my short pitch, I specialise in the metal and rock music. This is because, first of all, I enjoy listening to these genres the most. I'm not afraid of other genres, of course, but I don't enjoy them as much as rock and metal. You could think of bands as Dio, Iron Maiden, Metallica as my main inspiration. Updated to the modern standard for music, of course.

As for my experience, my main experience lies with mixing smaller bands that were starting out with recording, with the occasional professionals to work with. Therefore, my list of credits is small. I realise this, and this is also considered in my rates. I'm not very expensive for what I do, while I do have access to professional gear, three mixing & mastering locations and two recording locations (three if you include home-recording).

Bottom line: I will try my absolute best to satisfy your needs, while also trying to apply what I consider "good" music.

It's very easy to work with Jelle. He's very professional. He delivers the work on time, gives advices and always listens to his clients needs. I'm very happy for the work he did on my track Things I've Said. He did a great rock mix to it! Highly recommended!

Interview with Jelle Haasnoot

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: Oof... my strongest still, I would consider to be my flexibility. I will try to fit the clients planning, budget and facilities into my own. I don't work by a single, rock-solid standard (mainly since I can't afford to, yet :) ), but try to be as flexible as possible.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: First of all, my honest opinion. If I consider a song to be recorded in such a bad state that it's not really possible to work with it, I won't latch onto it and still create something mediocre at best. I also want the song to be as good as it can get. Secondly, I will also bring my musical opinion to the table. Not to try to turn it into something I like, but to change it in a way that it benefits the song. Usually, when working with decent musicians, this is not necessary, and I won't have to say anything. But I will if I think it is needed.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: Depends on what the task is, but I will focus on mixing, because that is what I do the most. I usually start by listening to the tracks, creating a rough mix using just levelling and panning. If the tracks are really noise, I will edit those tracks first and then create a rough mix. I compare what I hear to what style the client prefers, and will apply effects to different tracks to try to create a track which still has its own personality, but also conforms to what the client wants to sound like. I try to include the client in between mixing steps to let them know what progress I'm making, and to hear whether they agree with the choices I make.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: I have multiple setups. At my recording place, I have access to many different microphones, preamps and analog gear. What I don't have, and miss a little there, is a larger live room to be able to record drums with their natural sounding reverb. In that same recording space, I have a separate room for mixing with a nice Zaor desk, a set of Kali IN-8's and a (portable) RME Fireface. I usually mix in the box, so I don't have a lot of outboard gear, but I don't really have a need for it yet. At my home address, I have a setup mainly aimed toward mixing and mastering. I prefer mastering at home, because I have a set of Genelec 8040's, and I prefer the high-end on these. The room I'm in at home is also very dampened, which leaves for a more neutral mixing and mastering environment.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: I really enjoy listening to Judas Priest, Dio, Iron Maiden, Metallica as per the older genres. Considering more modern music, I like to sound like modern Megadeth, Killswitch Engage, Ghost, among others...

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: I mostly do remote mixing for clients, with the odd recording job in between.
