Interview with El Cuarto

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I was working on three productions, before this COVID pandemic broke out. Right now I am doing my best to continue some of my work online, which is why I've set up ways to outsource my skills.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I can't deny Analog has produced incredible sounds across the years it was used, but digital is the current way to go, and I believe it is the future. Of course, nothing will ever replace recording a real instrument, which is why I thrive for, but after the preamps, everything I do is 100% digital.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I promise to always work in pro of what you want, and to guide you to the best way to achieve it.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I like to fulfill dreams. I like when a client comes out happier when they hear their song and love the result. It is truly what I work for.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: They'll ask for the price first! And I almost always say I am open for negotiation, depending on the needs of the client.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: Some people believe I do remixes or beats for electronic music and its derivatives. I don't have anything against that professionally, but I rather work with "analog" music, if you know what I mean.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: Truly: What do you want? I am really interested to hear what do you want to achieve. It is my guiding line for my work.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: The best advice I can give is to try to hire the provider that best suits your needs. Don't hire someone only based on budget or name, hire him/her because you truly believe your song will enhance after we are done with it.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Trick question! I've always believed that gear is only a tool. The true power behind the desk is your ears, your knowledge and your criteria. However, gear IS an important tool, and if I had to choose, I'd take the AKG 414 Stereo Pair, a portable Focusrite interface, a Macbook with Protools and the full P&M line of plugins, and some Behringer Truth pair of monitors. Yes, they're cheap, but believe me I know the sound.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: After I finished Music Business at SAE, and Recording Arts in Full Sail, I came back to Colombia, where I worked for producers at various studios for about 6 years. After that, I tried to build my own path by producing myself, working on other studios. Two years ago I decided it was time to build up my own studio, where I know fully offer my services as an Engineer and Producer. I've been at this for almost 10 years now.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I try to work as raw as possible, trying to go for more natural sounds, unless the song specifically asks otherwise. I believe that the song, its composition and production, are what defines its ultimate sound.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I'd say Foo Fighters, because of their raw way of doing music.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: I will share two: 1) Always think about the good of the song and therefore the artist as a product, and 2) Always protect yourself and your rights.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Various forms of Rock mainly, but I've done everything from latin-caribbean, to pop.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: My strongest skill is Mixing. I love it, hence I've developed it quite a lot.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I believe I bring outside of the box thinking, which I describe as trying to look at the stuff from a different perspective, which usually brings unexpected but amazing results to the end product. I don't usually listen to comercial music, but I do reference it now and then. I believe that is where this particular element comes from.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Depends entirely on the job I am performing, but I always like to establish the clients needs at the beginning of the project. It is the most important thing for me, since it is what will guide my artistic decisiones as I move forward.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I work with Protools, in a professionally made environment with acoustic treatment. I work with Waves and P&M plugins mainly. For recording, I have Focusrite interfaces and preamps, and AKG, Shure, Audix and Rode microphones.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: The list is huge! Rick Rubin es probably my favorite producer. He adapts to any style of music he works in, and I believe that to be an amazing skill.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: The most common type of work I've been getting recently is full productions, taking songs from scratch and converting them into what the artist and the team envisions.
