Interview with Jackson Yancey Audio

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: A project I worked on I am especially proud of is my band Inside Yet Alive's debut EP. This is a one man project so I had to write, record, mix, and master everything you hear which was difficult and time consuming, but rewarding.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment I'm working on a project for a local hardcore band, I was the recording engineer besides vocals, and am planning on mixing and mastering once we have all the tracks recorded.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Robin Leijon, he is a great mixing and mastering engineer and I have learned from him while starting out from tutorial videos!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital, these days with analog modeled plugins and what not it's hard to tell a difference between the two. It's also much easier for workflow and I can have a project done twice as fast at half the cost without compromising on quality.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will have a final product you're satisfied with.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love creating, it's the most rewarding part of my job and my life.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What makes you qualified to work with our music, my answer always is that I've been a musician my entire life and know exactly how you feel about what you create, I understand you want everything to be perfect and exactly how you vision it and I can bring that vision to life.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I produce the exact same mixes as all the other modern metal producers. I pride myself on making unique productions that don't sound like everyone else, but are still modern and polished.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask clients what kind of music and genre they play, what sound they are looking for, the aspirations and goals they want to achieve, and about themselves.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Have the sound you're looking for in mind and be able to describe it to me in a detailed way so I can bring the closest possible product to the surface.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Monitors, guitar, bass, microphone, and interface.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started producing since 2019 after recording demos in my friends basement for our band. It was amazing seeing the recording process from a musician stand point and made me want to work the computer for others.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I would describe my style of mixing as modern and polished, without sounding to fake and robotic.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: One artist I would love to work with is Spiritbox. They are quickly becoming one of the most popular artist in the metalcore genre and for good reason. They have unique music that doesn't only appeal to a small minority, while keeping the heavy aspect as well, they are the full package.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Get everything right at the source. You will set the mix up for success during the tracking stage if you get everything sounding good then.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I mainly work on modern metalcore music, but also have worked on rock, punk, and hardcore.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is definitely problem solving. It's very important especially in a mixing setting to make sure you're prepared for any dilemma that may present itself while you're working.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I believe what I bring to a song is unique, modern productions that set themselves apart from other productions so you can call it your own.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My typical work process is to gain stage all my tracks before mixing, then I apply whatever I need to DI's. I work with top down mixing so I like to mix into a compressor doing slight gain reduction only only on the snare. I also mix into saturation + limiting.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Monitors - JBL 305P MKII Interface - Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 DAW - Reaper

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Some other professional producers I look up to are Will Putney, Joey Sturgis, and Buster Odeholm.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work I do for clients is mixing and mastering, but I also do a bit of recording engineering when I need to!
