Chris is an absolute beast! A very professional beast I must add...I have written many songs with him and his songwriting and melody work is top notch. He has turned many of our songs into demos that would be acceptable as radio quality singles. We worked on a motion picture project together and the quality of the songs we presented the studio was Hollywood movie quality. I can't say enough good things about Chris and the talent he possesses.

Foust is amazing. He can do anything including writing, producing, singing, engineering, and mixing. The demos he produces and plays on are actually masters and I have placed his productions in film projects. The artists and producers I have pitched his work to in both Nashville and LA have been super impressed and we have gotten cuts and synch placements recently. Appreciate Chris’s professionalism, attitude, and work output. Again amazing and I can’t recommend enough!

In the area of performance, Chris is dynamic, versatile and entertaining. I have heard him sing Country, hard rock, pop, and even an Italian aria- all with perfection and great ease. He is a skilled guitarist and proficient on several instruments. No one works harder on songwriting than Chris. He has turned out some incredible songs, one of which will soon be released on a new Girls Next Door EP. Oh, and did I mention that he composes for screenplay and produces all of his material. Multi talented!!!

Interview with Christopher Foust

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: I love this question, and my answer revolves solely around comfort & versatility. I would bring a Focusrite Scarlett, the DAW Reason, Shure SM7b, Fender P-Bass, and a Gibson Les Paul BFG. This setup would allow me to track just about any type of music and come out with a solid product.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I’ve been involved in music since the age of 9. I was trained classically in voice starting at 9 joining the Nashville Children’s Choir and performing at Carnegie Hall in NYC. My first professional record was made at age 14 and I’ve been performing, writing, and recording ever since. Attended Belmont University for audio engineering, toured with both country and rock bands, and have recorded over 200 songs. Also, along the way I founded and exited two agencies, worked in marketing for labels & distributors, as well as built a career as a digital marketing executive.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: My still is easy to describe: dynamic and soulful. Wether I’m tracking my own vocals or mixing and editing, I do my best to make sure the end product engages the listener on an emotional level and also takes them on a ride.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: My dream artist would have to be Prince, but I wouldn’t necessarily want to work with him. I’d rather just sit back and watch his genius. As far as an artist to work with directly, I’d have to say The Darkness, Motley Crue, Banks, or Trent Reznor.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: The one tip I would give to any producer would be to not let production get in the way of the song. Keep your processes simple and let the production be the vehicle through which the song and/or the artist can shine brightest.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I work primarily in three areas: rock, country, & pop. The work I do in rock is focused on producing masters. My country work revolves around songwriter demos or providing full backing tracks. My work in pop music has been focused on producing music for film & Synch.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: My strongest skills are my vocal abilities and song arrangement. I started classical vocal training at age 9 and have continued to hone my craft ever since. I have performed in multiple genres including metal, country, pop, r&b, soul, and southern rock. Song arranging is strong skill of mine, where I have the ability to construct a quality song that meets modern time constraints but also allows for creative and emotional expression.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I bring large production quality that is dynamic, big guitar sounds, and most importantly a strong and soulful vocal delivery.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Primarily focusing on writer demo's or instrumental track production, the process starts with a brief call/zoom/email exchange to determine particulars (delivery date, vibes, influences) and collect any needed documentation (lyric sheets, contact info, chord charts, audio files). Then I move into production immediately. Depending on the track requirements, tracking requires 1-5 days and mixing an additional 1-2 days. Next, we enter into a review period of 1-3 revisions and then move on to final delivery.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: My studio setup revolves completely around sonic quality and efficiency. I operate in multiple DAW's (primarily Pro Tools and Reason+) and utilize a small amount of quality outboard gear. Most of my processing is done "in the box" aside from my vocal outboard rack and guitar gear (Matchless, Bogner, Gibson, etc...). This allows me to keep my costs low, quality high, and turn around quick.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I am a music fan first and production nerd second. The musicians that inspire me the most are Prince, Stone Temple Pilots, and Chris Stapleton. These artists gave incredibly soulful vocal deliveries, but also made timeless music in their respective genres. My inspiration for production is a solid mix of Mutt Lange, Bob Rock, and Justin Hawkins.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: The most common type of work I perform is in songwriter demo production or instrumental track production for other vocalists. For songwriter demo production I either co-write the material or receive a work-tape and build a track from the ground up. This means I perform every instrument, all vocals, produce, and mix in my studio. Due to my experience and training, I am able to produce full tracks for clients in any genre.
