Micah Forsyth on SoundBetter

My exploration of sound began in 1998 when I played my flute through a crybaby wah and a tube amp set to 11. Since then I’ve been taking cool sounds and making them cooler. I've worked with the Grammy Award winning Digable Planets, the Grammy Nominated Anwar Marshall, and many others. Contact me for more info or just to say hi!

I offer recording, mixing, and editing services form my Philadelphia based recording studio. I've been a full time audio engineer since 2010. I've worked with a long list of artists across many genres but I tend to focus on soul. To me this includes a lot of hip-hop and pop music since soul has become such a huge influence on many modern artists. I try to live at this intersection of classic and modern.

Micah Forsyth is hands down one of the most professional and passionate practitioners of the craft I know. In a decade's pursuit of working with various studios/engineers to find a dynamic that made sense, I found my home with Micah. Patient, encouraging, expedient & always willing to teach what he's learned to keep the true essence of musicianship alive amongst the curious minded and true hearted. Your time and money is well spent with the homie. ✌🌙

Interview with Micah Forsyth

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: This question is nonsense. Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages and it completely depends on your desired outcome which way will be most effective. So many factors go into sound, it cannot be broken down into two simple categories or methods.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: Whatever gear you can build a boat with.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I've been playing music my whole life. First I studied flute in elementary and middle school then added bass in high school. By college I was into music production and engineering and I became a full time audio engineer in January of 2010.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: Fun. I try to make each song an enjoyable listening experience.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Soul

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: Every project is different but I try to ask a lot of questions and listen to references with the client. My goal is to figure out what your projects sound is, and what it needs to get there. Then I can start picturing what I will need to do with the recording and mixing to match.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I own a 1,000 square foot recording studio. We have a live room with a separate drum booth in addition to the control room. We run an analogue/digital hybrid. Mixing primarily in the box but relaying on outboard gear for recording, saturation, compression and other processing.

  15. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  16. A: I recorded and mixed a full live album for the Digable Planets at the Ardmore Music Hall in 2017.

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: Producing for artists and film with my company "DYAD", recording and mixing music I love, and raising my two year old son!

  19. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  20. A: Not yet!

  21. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  22. A: To find your sound and bring it out, and to work until you love it.

  23. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  24. A: Hearing how many unique voices are out there!

  25. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  26. A: Q) Are you as cool in real life as you seem on SoundBetter? A) Yes

  27. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  28. A: That its magic. It is not. The writing and performing of music is the hardest and most important part. There are almost always many ways a song can be mixed. Almost all of my mixes involve very simple processing and mixing, its about doing the right thing, not the most things.

  29. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  30. A: What do you want to sound like? What about your sound do you like? and not like?

  31. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  32. A: Communicate. Talk, Talk Talk. Making sure myself and the client are on the same page is the most important thing. Sound can be very difficult to describe and there are a million ways to mix every song. This is why both sides must ask a lot of questions and reference songs are often key.

  33. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  34. A: Kendrick Lamar. To Pimp a Butterfly.

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: Listen

  37. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  38. A: Mixing

  39. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  40. A: Distortion! haha, but for real, I don't like boring mixes. I tend to use more aggressive saturation and other effects to bring out what makes each song unique.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Stax Records, Stevie Wonder, The Meters, George Clinton, Dan Auerbach, and sooooooo many more!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I am usually recording and mixing small bands and vocalists.
