Interview with Felix Nicholson

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm really proud of my track I composed for Intel's 2019 CES Expo (check it out on my wesbite!). I think it's really bright and exciting and hits hard.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: An EP with my project St Nothing that is a mix of baroque music and dreamy pop.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Sissy Smith - she's an amazing vocalist and composer based in LA. Hire her for your next pop project!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital for speed and ease of use. Also it's much easier to collaborate online using digital.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will deliver a polished, professional track that aims to bring a project to life.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The challenge of always working in new styles, and trying to understand customers/ collaborators aims. I also love the problem-solving of writing to visuals: working out how best to compliment an exciting moment or edit is very rewarding to me.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Customers generally ask me questions about who I have written for / my experience. Most of the answers to these can find found elsewhere in my profile or my website, but I typically try and get a sense of their taste and send them projects I have worked on that are similar to what they like.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Probably that you're basically just copying references... I think a lot of commerical work involves genuine problem solving and creativity and you really don't know what you're going to end up with when you start on a project. But that's what keeps it exciting!

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: - What emotional reaction do you want this music / project to achieve? - Are there any references or tracks that you think are similar to what you're looking for? - Is there any style / emotional reaction you DON'T want the project to achieve?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: A person's creative voice is their most important asset. I advise you listen to their portfolio and try and see if your tastes and sound align.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A mac-book, Ableton Live, an audio interface, omnisphere and a 414 Mic.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started doing music when I was 10 and studied it throughout high-school. I studied at Berklee College of Music and then interned at Human Worldwide. Following this I've been working on freelance music projects for about two years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: High energy, exciting and modern.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Young Thug. I think he's such an influential and original artist, with a totally unique voice.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Limit most of your keys and synths, but leave the bass totally uncompressed. The bass will hit harder (just turn it up if isn't cutting through) and the keys will sound more confident and clear.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Electronic, Hip-Hop and Pop, as well as commerical music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Creating high-energy, modern music that excites.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: When working on a song I bring an open-minded approach to style and genre. I really want to create something everyone involved loves and serves the artist or visual (if there is one). When working with visuals I bring an attention to detail - I try and compliment every crucial cut and moment in the visual and make sure the music is complimentary and not overwhelming.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I usually spend a few hours to 1 work day creating an initial demo (length can vary depending on the brief). Following this I send it to my client and generally email/ call to chat about what they're thinking. I usually make 1-2 revisions to find a point we're happy with, and also to fine-tune any mixing issues.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I generally write on Logic or Ableton, depending on the brief. I primarily write 'in the box' using a mix of Kontakt, Omnisphere and Splice. However I have access to microphones and recording equipment and can easy record vocalists if required.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am a huge fan of modern hip-hop: Future, Young Thug and Drake are big inspirations in this style. I also love a lot of modern electronic-pop, such as Ariana Grande, Max Martin and Flume. I think my taste is very eclectic however - I love jazz, r&B and techno and really enjoy the challenge of working in multiple styles.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mostly create original music for my clients. This has included commerical music for Apple, Intel, Target and more, as well as work for individuals. I generally make electronic and hip-hop tracks that have been used by rappers and vocalists, as well as in commercial settings.
