Interview with RB Production

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on a project with JMidd called “Keep It Real” and it just seemed to come together quickly. I played guitar on the track.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Perfecting some guitar tones and trying to finish another album.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I haven’t seen anyone that I know yet.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both! Analog is great and always will be but digital is really impressive these days to the point that it’s hard to tell the difference some times.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will make sure that your song/project is exactly what you want.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Literally everything!

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How much do you charge? I always respond with the rates that I have.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it looks to be easy from an outside perspective.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are you wanting this to sound like? Can you provide me with some examples? Do you want me to be creative?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be precise in exactly what you’re wanting out of the project/song. Be very specific.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My JTV-59 guitar, Helix Floor, Headrush FRFR, my D’Angelico Acoustic, and a Nord Stage 3 Keyboard.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I am a pastor at heart and called by Jesus to help people. I’ve been involved in music for 25 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Whatever it needs to be, I embrace diversity.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Mark Tremonti because I believe that he is the most accomplished guitarist of all time!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Let your ears lead you without losing good theory.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hip Hop and Rock

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Guitar by far!

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Creativity and I definitely try to make it sound more dynamic by using automation.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: It depends on what the project is. Recording guitar is by far the easiest for me. Mixing is a little more intuitive and I usually take more breaks to keep my ears good. Mastering usually goes pretty fast for me. I try to make subtle moves unless the song wasn’t mixed well.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I use an iMac with Logic Pro X along with many plugins from waves, plug-in alliance, fabfilter, Slate digital, etc. I use a solid state logic interface. For guitar I run through a Helix Floor and I have around 8 guitars that I use. I also use a ML-1 mic to record vocals and acoustic guitars. I use several things to master audio.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Chris Lord Alge, Dave Pensado, Prince, and Mark Tremonti

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Guitar work, mixing, and mastering.
