Interview with Davion Knight
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: While I attended college I got to work on a pop record called War. In which I was the mixer and was graded on the rubrics of a professional mix.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on mixing a haunted choir Halloween track for a music library.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Sam Whips Allison
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. However, If I had to choose, for my workflow and lifestyle I would have to go digital. But I enjoy analog as well.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To do my best work to meet the vision the client has for their project. along with delivering it upon the agreed deadline.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Adding that Midas touch in the creative process of the mix. Being fulfilled when a client tells me they are satisfied
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing is easy and that there is no structure to it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the vision that you have as to how you want your mix to sound once it is completed? Do you possess every single audio file that makes up the entire session? What is the endgame for this session? Will you release it on digital platforms? A sync placement? Personal project for school, church, or even charity event?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Do your best to attain the highest quality recording that you can possibly get. Because a killer mix won't fix a poorly recorded session. It may enhance it, but not fix the issue that may be caused in the recording stage.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My MacBook, USB hub, iLok, Interface, Sennheiser headphones

A: Cool, Calm, and Relaxed
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Christina Aguilera. She has such an amazing voice
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Do your best to stay in the -6db when recording vocals and/or instruments. Not only will you avoid clipping into the red. This way you also leave headroom for both the mixing and mastering engineers.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, R&B, House
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Communicating with key collaborators on sharing their vision of the final outcome
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: From a mix engineer standpoint. Only the way in which the audio, acoustics, and sounds are presented. The creative and production aspects have already been established by the songwriters, artists, and producers.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It's a very methodical and tedious one. In which once I have imported the audio files into my PT session to begin the mix. I follow a task list in preparing the session and begin the process until I reach the milestone that concludes the final mix.
