Armando Portillo on SoundBetter

Make your music sound its best, period!

I have been producing music for years and I have been mixing and mastering for only a year. Try me! as an experienced musician. I became a good engineer fast because my ear had more development tone-wise. This is the reason I say, try me! I love creating music, especially music with a good message. I do care about the content of music, thus, I do not do jobs on music that use foul language or obscene language. If that is the case I am not your guy. anyhow, I would love to work with you! Cheers!

Interview with Armando Portillo

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am proud to have worked on a song called "Mas Cerca Que la Piel" By Arjopor. I wrote, produced, mixed, and mastered it.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on a rock song. I posted it on this website.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: No, I do not know anyone from SoundBetter.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: both, analog because is fun; and digital because is convenient. The analog warmth you can produce with good plugins like the Oven, Vertigo VSM 3, FabFilter Saturn, Blackbox HG-2 MS analog design, LoopTrotter Sa2rate2, analog emulation compressors, API vision channel strip, etc.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to do a great-sounding mix or master. That is of course if the production for mixing is professional, and the mix is professional enough for mastering. I cannot fix production problems in the mix or mix problems in mastering. some minor problems are possible to fix. But I have found that unprofessional mixes do not sound as optimal, neither bad mixes sound as good when mastered.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: most, I like to mix, master, and guitar tracking.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: are you any good? I say, hell yeah!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: there are none. What I do is simple. I do whatever the client wants with his music.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: what kind of sound do you want? warm with lots of top-end? or warm and dark? which instruments do you want to stand out in the mix, and in which sections? etc..

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen to what they have done. Saying that you are good can only be proven by something you have done yourself. I have uploaded a demo of a song I am producing and recording (or was, by the time you are reading this)

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My electric Guitar, my iMac, my interface, and my headphones.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been a musician since age 14; I wrote my first song at age 17. I also played every weekend at church and produced live music as music director for several years. In 2021 I started to study music production, mixing, and mastering. I set up a home studio in my room and the fun started, which cost me around 20,000 dollars even though it is a modest home studio it was expensive.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: mostly progressive rock, Alt-rock, and melodic rock. However, I also love reggae, ballads, and jazz.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I never thought about that. But I wish I could work with Plini, because I like his sound. I really want to make music similar to his. but in my case with lyrics.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Stop buying millions of packs and wasting your money on sounds you can do at home. Get the best quality sounding sources in the production stage, so that your recording sounds mixed just by adjusting levels, which will help you to make your mix sound mastered, and when you master, you pretty much will just use a limiter and an eq, maybe a subtle saturation and you are done. In a few words: it all begins with the source, "producing and recording"

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I do more rock and ballads. But I have done reggae and a few pop songs.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Mixing, mastering, and guitar tracks.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I do everything in all the songs that I have done up to now. But what I am most proud of is the guitar parts of the songs. Because I am a guitarist and I love rock and roll.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Composing, arranging, recording, mixing and mastering.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
