Interview with Noah L.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on a sample pack right now for Bass House producers.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to always deliver a very cutting edge and high-quality track to my clients, utilizing the newest and freshest techniques used in the industry. All within a quick timeframe.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most common question I get asked is, "can you make it sound like [insert 13 different song names]?" My answer is always to focus on one style with maybe an accent of one or two others. Most of the time customers want all different kinds of influences but in reality, they just want one or two.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Ableton, Serum, Soothe2, ProL2, and my laptop
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been producing for 16 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Big, intense, and high energy
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Skrillex, because he is so innovative
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Check your mix in mono to make sure it will sound good on systems that don't have stereo capability.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic dance music (EDM)
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Sound Design
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Cutting edge sound design, and a clean radio ready sound
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: 1I work exclusively in the box but I have 2 Mackie XR624 monitors and I love them!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: RL Grime, Scott Storch, The Glitch Mob, Skrillex, and Ricky Remedy
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my time is spent remixing or producing electronic instrumentals for vocalists.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A lot of people think that, what producers do is really just pressing a few buttons and dropping in sounds to make a track. Talented musicians make what they do look easy, just like all experts, it takes years and years of work to get to a level where you can work out a decent track in a day.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: This remix of "A Milli" I had a large role in the production of, ended up going viral and was played by Diplo and Skrillex at Madison Square Garden on New Year's Eve. That was huge for me.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Malachi Mott, he is a mentor of mine and extraordinarily talented at what he does.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital is better for me so I can work on the road but I do appreciate the analog sound.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Making music is what I love doing more than anything in the world. The Joy of creating a piece of art for the enjoyment of someone else is unparalleled.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you want to get out of music, and what do you want to contribute to our industry?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If a customer wants to hire me, I would suggest they take a listen to my past work and see if what I do best is what they are looking for. I am flexible and can make anything, but if both me and the customer are both on the same page as far as what they want vs what I excel at, we can do some amazing work together.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start with the drums typically and build the hook around them. Then the rest of the track comes together surrounding the hook.
