Rick has mastered my last 3 albums, (eclectic styles from classical to pop) and his attention to detail and impressive knowledge of multiple genres of music has shone through, delivering high quality masters. The fact that he is a professional musician and producer too, means I trust Rick's ears to quality-check my mixes.

I've been working with Rick for several years now. He's a wonderful person, always attentive and willing to listen. Always ready to help when needed, and I've always been very impressed by the quality of his work. The quality of his mixes and mastering. On many occasions, he's saved pieces I've done!

Interview with Rick Clark

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Probably from a purely audio perspective; mastering Hans Zimmer's (and team) Frozen Planet II for BBC Earth...The quality of the music and recording was A+ and was a pleasure to have such positive feedback afterwards from everybody who worked on it up until that finishing stage.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A orchestral re-imagining of the music of Zelda. I've finished the recording of it, and now in the mix phase of the project.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: 100% both! I tend to prefer to keep the mastering process "in the box" - assuming some analog equipment was used in recording, the life has already been added. At the mastering stage, my goal is to keep the signal clean and just bring out the best of what is recorded already.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: To communicate and provide you with what you need to the best of my abilty.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Discovering new artists and hearing new music from artists I love before anyone does!

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: "Can I have more cowbell", I say no. (Just kidding)

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: In regards to mastering - that we can fix the mix.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Normally just to hear the rough mix, or the final mix (if I'm only mastering).

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: If you're looking for mastering, especially in an orchestral genre, give me a shot, I wont let you down ;)

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Perhaps I'm being too literal here, but; portable MacBook rig, two of my Genelec's, a Generator and bug spray

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started working at film music record label when I was 18, I started producing for them a few years later and have now been doing this for over 20 years.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Orchestral, mostly - but I've also worked with a few punk bands, so go figure.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: John Williams. Because he's the greatest of all time.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Use your ears, and your gut. Not meters and other peoples advice.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Orchestral film, TV & scores

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Finding the right dynamic and tonal balance.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I have an natural instinct with how to approach each song or album.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I have a converted barn-studio in upstate New York that is fully acoustically treated with a 7.1 Genelec Studio Monitor set up.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: All the wonderful arrangers, musicians and composers I work with.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I specialise in orchestral mixing and mastering, mostly film scores.
