I just finished a project playing bass for Dexter's Laboratory. He sent 2 great tracks for me to play on . What he delivered was awesome. Nice, clear wav files, and was a pleasure to play and work with. A fine gentleman for sure.

Interview with Qali Stacks

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: The Equipment I have at my disposal is as follows: Apogee Symphony IO, Yamaha HS8 Monitors, Never 1073 LB, Millennia HV-35, Daking MicPre, Inward Connections Brute Limiter, API Lunchbox, Peluso P67 Tube Condenser Microphone, Sterling Audio ST69 Tube Condenser Microphone, Machine Mikro, Avid Pro Tools 10 11 & 12, Logic Pro X, Waves Plug-Ins, Lexicon Reverb, Auto Tune, Melodyne, Slate Digital, Soundtoys, Universal Audio UAD-2 satellite and other plugins.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Southern #CaliFlyNiggaz Vol. 1

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: That mix engineering is a non essential part of the musical process and anybody can do it.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Have seperate mix and mastering engineers work on your project. Don't have the same person facilitate both roles.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: What do you envision the record sounding like? Show me an example.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Be clear in communicating what it is that you want and be open to building a relationship even though its a business transaction. Sometimes getting to know a client and their personality helps in deciding how the record being produced/mixed should sound.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Pharrell Williams, he's been my favorite producer for over a decade, I love his minimalist approach when it comes to many of his records and his pop sensibilities have no creative equal in the urban genres.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I usually work on Urban genres of music: Hip-Hop/Rap and Soul/R&B. But I am a fan/student of all genres of music.

  17. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  18. A: I prefer a mix of both Analog and Digital, as well as old and new. I like to take advantage of different sonic characteristics and use it to carve out the soul of each individual record. I typically like analog summing, but I prefer for modern i/o options because of their clarity, I like the digital toolset and the capabilities provided by it over analog mixing techniques, I absolutely prefer digitals recall-ability.
