Interview with Chris Tunez
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I have to say it is the project i'm currently working on that will be my first solo album. I am the Artist and Producer for this project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on my solo album.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I would recommend Daramola because he's an excellent singer and songwriter and I would also recommend Dan Konopka, he is an excellent engineer with a remarkable ear.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, Analog gives you an undeniable sound if used right and Digital takes that undeniable sound and maximizes it times a thousand.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is to go above and beyond to provide the best product they can ask for.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Making music, it's what I love to do. I can't get enough of it.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do I Mix and Master? No, I leave that to the pros.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Believe it or not, a lot of newcomers think the beat is free and that the lyrics makes the song. They both are synonymous and just as important as the other.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What sound are you trying to achieve? What is the goal for this song? What do you think will make you take your creativity to the next level?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be specific in what you are looking for. References help. Maintain an open line of communication.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, Interface, Midi Keyboard, Headphones; that's all I need.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Music producer. 15 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Eclectic, Soulful, Melodic
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: VanJess; I love their songwriting and singing abilities, they have an awesome production team and I think my sound would compliment their voices.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more and more is sometimes too much.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Hip Hop, R & B, & Pop music. I am open to work on other genres as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Arrangement and melody creation
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a different sound to a song that is not heard in today's music. I like being different and I think doing this gives the artist to make the beat their song in the end and not emulate what is heard but what is felt within.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I always start with a blank slate and go from there. I usually create based on how I feel at the moment or what inspired me that day. It may just be drums and I build from that or just a simple Piano melody.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Laptop, Akai Midi Controller, Focusrite Interface
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Kanye West, Dr. Dre, Just Blaze, Pharrell Williams & Timbaland; These are the producers who inspired and continue to inspire me creatively.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly create the instrumental music for the artist or company etc.
