Interview with Jesus Armas | The Gemz Studios

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Quien de las Dos is a single I am very proud of. The production turned out great in only one week. The videoclip we made turned out great as well and the results we've been getting after it was released had been overwhelmingly good.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently, my own music and some collaboration projects.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't at the moment.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Both environments are amazing for music production, mixing and all else. Each have their own pros and cons but the best combo for me would be a hybrid environment.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Commitment. I'm committed to make their music sound as close as the industry standard as possible. And guide them in the process of releasing new music and do it right.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Helping on telling a story, whether it'd be a happy or a sad one. Storytelling in general is something that must not be forgotten.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can I sound like "that artist? My answer is always: you can sound influenced by that artist but your uniqueness will always stand out. Make sure your uniqueness is great and polished and then you will influence the future generation.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That's simple to do. And it really depends on our creativity.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are you looking for with this song? What are the emotions that drove you on writing this song? Who are your top favorite artists?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen to the previous work and then listen to your music. Find if we are the right fit for your project.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A MacBook Pro with enough space and RAM, my current Audient interface, my headphones and my electric gutiar.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  30. A: The song is first. The rest is just an aggregate.

  34. A: My strongest skill is developing engaging vocal production arrangements and melodic arrangements to tracks.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I am always looking for that extra sauce in the music. Whether it'd be simplicity or complexity. I let the music to showcase what it really needs. Listening carefully is really important.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: When producing, I like to start with a top-line. A simple idea that evokes the needed emotion for that particular moment. For mixing, I like to nurture my ears before getting my hands on whatever song I'm working at the moment by taking the time and listen to references either sent by the artist or previously chosen between me and the artist.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My current studio setup is based out of a desktop PC, a couple of Mackie MR524 speakers and an Audient iD14 MKI.

  42. A: I get inspired by people like Warren Huart, Colt Caperrune, Graham Cochrane, Damian Keyes.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I typically work as a mix engineer for the most part of my current work. However, I really enjoy producing and writing as much as mixing.
