Interview with Robert "Conscious Clay" Davis

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on an EP called the Loose Ends EP and I produced it and engineered it.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on an album for myself as a music producer, and producing for other artists.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both, mixing the sound of analog and digital together creates endless opportunities.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will give you what you want. I will share my opinion, but you are the boss.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love making music and seeing its affect on the world. Large or small, I love to hear that somebody cares about something I worked on.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How long will it take me to work on it? Depending on the request of the job, it may vary, but only extreme situations would take me over a week.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That electronic music isn't real music. There such a thing as fake music, but a computer doesn't make it fake. The work that goes into a song and the musical/emotional response is what makes a song real.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is your goal of this song? How do you want it to sound. What are a few of your references?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Please be organized. Be as clear as possible of what you want. Communication is key, that goes for me also.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I can bring fullness to a song. As, a producer and engineer, I can bring my understanding of arrangement, what a song needs when and where, I can mix a song I didn't produce and help bring the song to life.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I listen, A lot. Before I start, I understand the songs as much as possible, create goals for the song based on the clients request, Then I execute on those goals with tons and tons of review.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: So many producers and engineers inspire me. To name a few I am inspired by the work of Mike Dean, Stephan Ponce, Ludwig Göransson, Noah Goldstein, Kanye West, and Derek Ali.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I work on the production of songs (co-production or original production), and I mix and/or master songs.

  27. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  28. A: 1. Solar Panel electricity converter. 2. Laptop 3. Headphones 4. LPK 25 (small midi keyboard) 5. Native Instruments Maschine

  29. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  30. A: I recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bowie State University with a degree in Music Technology. I have been Producing for 10 years, and Engineering for 4 years. I am at the beginning of my career path.

  31. Q: How would you describe your style?

  32. A: My style is mainly Progressive Hip Hop and Pop, very musical. I enjoy making music appeal to the mass without losing its integrity.

  33. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  34. A: I would like to work with Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, and Childish Gambino the most. They push the boundaries of Hip Hop music with their unique way of using musicology and technology.

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: Sound Design is not just for film. The deep and precise manipulation of sound for a specific response is just as important in music as in film. Spend time on every sound.

  37. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  38. A: I usually work on Hip Hop, R&B, Jazz, and Pop music.

  39. Q: What's your strongest skill?
