Chéri Yielle Services on SoundBetter

I specialize in emotion & storytelling. I offer lead vocals, background vocal arrangement, lyric, and songwriting. My background education in music therapy trained me to isolate different elements of music, enabling me to weave in and out of genres and concepts. I can go dynamic + modern, classic + substantive, or any combination. Let's push limits

Interview with Chéri Yielle Services

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was a co-writer on the debut album of Elvis Molina - a fellow independent artist. I am so proud of our work together because he also worked with me as I developed my debut EP. Both works are very introspective and biographically inspired power-pieces about our families and coming of age. The beauty is in the quality, authenticity, and how the development of the music parallels our development as artists and people.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A follow up to my EP, songs to place in TV/Film, and songs to pitch to other artists in the music business.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital for now. I'm able to manipulate so much, and my learning has been solely with digital. I will expand later, but I'm still learning to master what I can achieve where I am.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I cherish someone's trust in me to provide them with the product they desire. My promise is that I will take their goals and objectives for each song and sculpt it with the same care as if it were solely my own.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I like that I never have the same day twice, and even the most boring or quiet moment can prove itself inspiring or useful later.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Customers ask me how I thought of an idea. My answer is usually something random because anything can spark an idea. It's more about how you follow it up.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: There is a misconception that every great song has to be the same song. FALSE! No matter the trends, it's about how unique you can present that type of experience or how attractively you can do the opposite. Creativity isn't so rigid.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you want someone to do/feel when they hear this song (dance, kiss, cry, smile, etc)? Is there a message you want in this song? Who is a well-known artist that you could imagine also singing this song?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Explain what you're looking for in any way that you can - as abstractly or directly as you need to. The more examples, whether it's a YouTube link or an animal sound, the better. BUT... adding why you want that helps because I may come up with something different that achieves that same objective in a way that you love more. Having an open mind opens the door from good (what you wanted) to awesome (something truly special that you hadn't thought of yourself).

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Guitar (I play), Notebook, Cajon drum, Gathering drum, singing bowl

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I knew this was what I wanted to do since before high school. At only 24 years old, I've been doing this for about 10 years. I've learned a lot from a lot of people, and I believe I'm unlimited because I will never stop learning. I learn even as I pass my knowledge and experience on to others.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Soulful, timeless, current, engulfing

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Childish Gambino because his music is so unique and engaging. It's so intelligent and relatable while maintaining such a fun sonic experience. I think we'd make something so memorable together.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Never run away from a risky idea or an idea that doesn't seem to fit exactly. Always hear what it sounds like before dismissing it. Often times, it's about what comes after that validates its placement or serves as a reason to pass on it.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, R&B, Soul, Acoustic, Singer-songwriter, EDM (hooks) or Hip-Hop (hooks).

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is maintaining authenticity in even the most commercially correct approach. Whether it's in emotional depth or clever use of sounds or words, I am good at delivering what you want without making you feel like it's the same thing you've heard over and over again. In some cases, the other strongest skill i have is in revising until you get that feeling.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring an experience personalization that can be hard to find with other people. For some, it's reflected in the deep truth-telling and intimacy of the lyrics that feel personal. For my songwriting clients, it's the way I take their story and sculpt a song of any vibe to tell their story. For my writing collaborators, I bring the element of excitement and surprise when I choose a melody that feels familiar enough, but also fresh and new to their words.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Whether I'm starting with a totally blank canvas or a specific goal/concept/idea in mind, I'm conscious of my desire to create an experience. I create by taking myself on the journey of the audience. With every word or note, I'm sensing how I feel and how I want to feel, where I want to be taken. Working in this abstract way, I'm not limited by genre or topic. I learn more and more how to create something that somebody may want to feel/replay over and over again.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a home set-up with a Scarlette interface, a Blue microphone, a Mac Desktop, and Yamaha speakers and full keyboard. Typically, I create with Logic Pro X.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Swizz Beatz, Missy Elliot, T-Pain, SZA, Prince, Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson, Brandy, Hayley Williams, Mixed By Ali, Josh Goodwin, Childish Gambino, Timbaland

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most common work: 1: I'm sought for writing lyrics and melodies for pop or urban R&B songs as well as hooks for Hip/hop songs. 2: Arranging and referencing background melodies.
