Interview with Enzo Scognamillo

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm really proud of my song Stay With You I released on 2019. I wrote the song and hired a singer to perform it (as my voice was not the best for the character I wanted to depict). Then, I sent the vocals to a small label in Sao Paulo. They loved the song and produced it. I also helped a little bit with the production, mixing and mastering but the goal was to let someone else do it, I believe when talented people get together to do something the results are always better than when it's done by a single person.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: On a remix of a song I wrote and released in 2019, and in a cover remix song which I'm not allowed to specify yet.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: The singer Thomas Daniel. He's a great singer, very easy to work with and understands the tasks really fast.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: If I have to pick only one I'd go for analog but some tools work better in the digital realm.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I'll get to your satisfaction or I'll fully refund you.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The ability to express myself, even if it's only a Mastering job.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How long do you need to produce and mix this track? What other tracks have you produced/mixed/mastered?

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I don't believe you can make a great mix working only on headphones.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What's your goal with this project? Are you more interested in streaming or live performances? When do you need this track to be released?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Always look for serious professionals that put their life on the line to be in the music business, those are the ones who'll go through hell to get you a perfect track. In this market there are a lots of semi-professionals with fancy studios and loads of gear that rely on other people and marketing get their job done. Trust hard workers, not labels.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Since there would be no electricity I'd take an acoustic guitar, a piano, a kick drum, a shaker and a snare drum.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started singing professionally in Hard Rock cover bands from 1999-2004, in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. During this period I was a university student in Electrical Engineering, studying classical singing to keep my voice in place and attending local music production courses (they were very scarce at that time and place). From 2005-2010 I paused my music career to pursue of an international one in Finance. I succeeded, but my happiness has always been attached to music so I came back to Brazil and started creating Electronic Dance Music with a DJ friend. From then on I got more involved in the electronic music scene and produced some remixes of famous tunes until I realized I needed to write my own songs, so I invested a couple of years in studying songwriting and music theory. In 2019 I released my first dance music on a minor label from Sao Paulo and now I'm working on more tracks to be released this year.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Sentimental and more focused on melodies, harmonies and groove

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Calvin Harris, because he's a complete artist as he writes, produces and plays music instruments

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Focus on the style of your music you're producing until it fits. Then, try adding something new that glues your sound with your personality

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: EDM and Pop

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Uniqueness, sentiment and impact

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: The goal is always to create a great impression to the listener, so I repeatedly listen to the starting material and build the ideas to be developed. Then, when the work is on the 80% completion mark, I brainstorm again to add more vibes to the sound and make it unique.
