Miquel has worked as a guitarist in several musical theatre shows under my direction. Creativeness, high quality sound, perfect combination with the rest of the band/orchestra, and always a smile at the face. He is my first choice for guitars and a reliable sound engineer for any kind of recordings

Interview with Miquel Concú @eSONGpro

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Probably the last one! I was given the songs from scratch, and it makes me proud to see how I made them grow and grow. And the artist is happy too, which is the most important!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At this moment I'm finishing a project for a singer-songwritter, which I produced, recorded, played most instruments and mixed. Also, at eSongPRO, we do music for corporations and commercial purpose.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Well, there's a lot of known fellow artists who master their craft.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Why not analog AND digital?

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: All details will be taken care.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Probably what I like the most is the feedback, the relationship I have with my client and everything I learn from every production.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: They ask a lot about pricing (of course!), gear, sound ideas, they are normally concerned about an aspect of their music. I always try to give them a positive answer. My job is to highlight those things you do best and you don't need much money for that if you already have your talent.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Probably that producers are problem fixers. If the song, the takes, the arrangement, whatever... is not right, don't pretend the producer to fix it.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Well normally I ask about their goals and objectives concerning their music, and I try to help them accomplish what they intend.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Just listen to the work and, if you like it, ask. Remember, it's not the gear, it's what you feel.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: They would be a guitar, a notebook, a pencil, an iPad and something to plug it in! I would make records with that!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I grew up as a musician studying with some of the greatest professionals in my country. I soon started playing on local bands, tributes, and so... Then I had the opportunity to be part of some tours and bigger events and started to meet great musicians from who I never stop learning. I've always been interested on music production, but never thought I would be able to make a living out of it until I found myself being hired from other fellow musicians. They might have though I was good at my craft!

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I'm a rock oriented producer/musician. That means that I always look for emotion, energy, power, things that make the listener say "Wow". My music sounds natural, woody, clear, organic, and is easy to understand for the listener. I don't do music only with musicians in mind.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Wow, so many! To randomly name one: Fito Páez. In my opinion he's one of the greatest songwritters alive.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Sure! Don't ever think about the production as a goal instead of an instrument for your music. No plugin, tweak, piece of gear, glamourous name or brand, will fix anything for you. Just focus on making great songs and great arrangements. If you have that, you're almost there.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mainly pop, rock and singer-songwitter stuff. But I've also done other genres such as world music, acoustic, music, EDM... Just listen to my portfolio!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I would say that it is to listen to the song and let it tell me what it needs. I will only do a move, add a part, take a decision if I clearly see that the song deserves it. And I apply that rule no matter what's my role in the project. For instance, If I'm the guitar player, the guitar track is not my main concern. I always focus on the song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: For me, the magical word is "emotion". If it doesn't touch or reach yo, then it's not right. So that is what I try to bring to the songs. My clients come to me with great songs, but they want me to understand that message and make it noticeable throughout all the process.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Basically I listen to the clients needs and then I design a Production schedule and a team (if needed). Then we work side by side with constant feedback, and listen to the artists demands and corrections. We deliver the work when everybody is happy.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I'm an ITB mixer, so that's my setup when I mix. My Mac computer and a bunch of plugins such as Waves bundles, Eventide, SSL, UA... We also use a bunch of virtual instruments (Guitar Rig, Positive Grid, Waves GTR, Line6 POD, IK Multimedia...). Recording wise we use real amps and instruments, having acces to a huge variety of options thanks to our network.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I love rock bands like Foo Fighters, Muse, and all the classics, also love singer-songwritters (Jorge Drexler, Fito Páez, Jack Johnson, Alex Ferreira...). Lately I'm more interested on independent artist, more than the mainstream. But what I like the most is to discover new and inspiring music through my clients.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: We mainly do remote recordings and mixing. Our most common client is an artist/band who has an idea of what he or she needs and works in a budget. With our networking process we can offer multiple professional options and always fit the budget.
