Sir Tamás Bárány

Music producer, Pianist

Sir Tamás Bárány on SoundBetter

I've worked with Gold, Platinum and Grammy award-winning artists as a sound engineer, producer and/or musician.

I've been playing piano since the age of 8. Studied at the Bela Bartok Music Academy in Hungary. I began working in recording studios at the age of 15, and have been a professional live and studio musician since 17. I'm creating music for film, TV, and commercial artists, including an international TV series for Discovery Channel, news, station IDs and commercials. I'm 40something now and living in the sunny Andalusian mountains, enjoying life and setting up a live-in studio complex with a unique vibe in a centuries-old Moorish village full of charm and natural treasures. Recording outdoors is one of the great advantages of working here, as it's very quite in the village or out on the mountain side... It's a very inspirational place to compose and record new ideas, or work out the old ones. You feel like you're on vacation while writing and/or recording tracks in the mountains. You must try it at least once. You won't regret it...

Interview with Sir Tamás Bárány

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: Some people think that I can build a beautiful castle from a pile of shit...

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: The most important is a good musician playing a good song with a good instrument front of a mic... all this is going thru a analog to digital converter to record with a computer software what is loaded with quality plug-ins, software synths and a huge sample library. All this can be done in an analogue environment if someone prefers it. No limits to make a good song and a good performance sound like it should be.

  5. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  6. A: Listening to them... correct their mistakes... show them different ways of doing their thing.... offer different arrangements with different instrumentation... record them properly.... make some magic while mixing... All this in a natural environment... not in a cement box.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: A Hip-Hop album, a Bass solo album and also trying to finish my instru-mental Funky-Jazz Rhodes solo record,

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: If you work hard after recording your album, I promise your album will make it big.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Connect with great spirits and creating musical babies together.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What kind of equipment you use? The most unique and most expensive... My ears.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Helping artists to perfect their performance and tracks. Making songs sounding fuller with good arrangements, proper editing if needed and special mixing techniques.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Work the most on a good song with a good performance... don't waste time on the technical aspects. It will not effect the sales.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: You want to be original or want to sound like somebody famous?

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A piano, an acoustic guitar, a mic, a converter, a laptop... and a couple of solar panels.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Free form.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Quality, well done music in a variety of styles like Pop, Rock, Classical, Soul, Jazz, Rap or World music.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: Depends on the artist's needs... after I hear It, I can tell. But it can vary between the most simple to the most complicated. I'm ready for the challenge.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: All the good ones... the list is too long.

  31. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  32. A: Both. It's going down to mp3 anyways. Today 7 out of 10 engineers can't tell the difference. Imagine the audience.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Colors, ideas, tightness... and a fine tuned mix.

  35. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  36. A: Plenty, Of course the most successful is Christopher Tin's double Grammy winning album... Finding vocalists for the project, arrange the recording process, work together with Chris in the studio to record the best vocal tracks.

  37. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  38. A: No. Sorry

  39. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  40. A: Don't judge a book by its cover... Good or bad.

  41. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  42. A: Since I'm 8 years old I play music... Now I'm 42... and still learning.

  43. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  44. A: All the good ones. Because it's a pleasure to work with good musicians.
