A-Major The Musician on SoundBetter

Looking for genre-bending production with pure melodies and full instrumentation? With my work, you can expect beats with little to no samples and sounds created straight from a keyboard with any selected instrument from a DAW. From funky Dance grooves, heavy hitting trap beats, to material that can be played in a movie, I got you covered.

Known as the self-proclaimed one man band, A-Major is a Canadian recording artist, songwriter, beat maker, composer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer whose genres range from Hip-Hop, Reggae to Dance and Electronic. A-Major competed in many competitions and festivals across Ontario with his high school bands as well as in Ottawa and New York as a percussionist. He then attended York University and earned a Bachelor's of Fine Arts Specialized Honours degree in Music while studying Classical Piano.

A-Major wrote and co-produced his first song at age 15 with a family friend, it was not until 2012 when he started to pursue music full time and release his material online. 2012 was also a year where A-Major began getting into Rap battling and performing at open mic and spoken word functions at school and throughout the city of Toronto.

To date, after remixing, tweaking and re-releasing songs on a few projects on SoundCloud, A-Major has released a few official mixtapes, a series of EP's on streaming platforms as well as on Bandcamp. A-Major also gained a lot of attention from his Rap battles in different Battle Rap leagues across The Greater Toronto Area, in July 2014, he appeared on Todd Shapiro's show on Sirius XM to do a freestyle battle on behalf of Mississauga's then Battle Rap league GotBars. A-Major is now determined to work with future generations of talent.

Interview with A-Major The Musician

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Digital because of its convenience; how quickly I can string together a track and move on to the next.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I will be dedicated and focused on the task at hand and give my best efforts.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Retro and classical influenced.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: I see myself working with people like The Weeknd, Lizzo or Rihanna simply because of their ability to cross genres and explore different styles; I admire and get inspired by artists who step outside of their comfort zone and cross boundaries in their craft.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Creating whatever I want and whatever I am inspired by on my own timeline.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: Music Production

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: This would be my first rodeo, so I do not have the answer to that yet.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: Started establishing myself as a full time artist and musician since 2012. Started playing Piano at age 6 and classically training at age 8. I also started getting into songwriting and rapping since 7, 8 years of age.

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: Dance remixes for some of the most popular songs past and present.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure you can identify what your strengths are and play to those strengths fully; be as authentic as possible.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Currently Dance/Electronic, but open to any genre.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: Substance; lyrics with a meaningful and motivational message if it is a song of my own.

  25. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  26. A: That I am just a recording artist, so other producers try to offer me beats when in fact I make beats as well.

  27. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  28. A: - Laptop - Keyboard - Microphone - Headphones - Bluetooth speaker

  29. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  30. A: Not at the moment.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Composition and Beat making.

  33. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  34. A: Make sure to bypass all effects applied to the track when recording vocals, this is so the latency of the recording will not be affected therefore causing a potential timing issue in the vocals.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: I look up to individuals like Dr. Dre, Timbaland and Diddy who have always had an elite set of ears for sound. Very into 90's and early 2000's Hip-Hop and R&B, also 80's Pop like Michael Jackson and Prince's Thriller and Purple Rain era respectively. I also am into Dancehall Reggae, Traditional Reggae and Alternative Rock.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Currently, I am just working with a home setup. A Roland E-09 keyboard, Shure performance microphone with a pop filter connected to a TASCAM USB Audio interface, and a laptop.
