Interview with THM PRODUCTIONS

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Currently I'm working mostly on the next EP for german rapper Fenris83 and the debut album of Wrd.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Definitely both! For me, it's more of a workflow question and what sound you're after. Two examples. On one hand, I love to mix in digital. The sound is equal and it's much more flexible, it's quicker and I can work everywhere, etc. On the other hand I just love to use my analog synths for many of my synth sounds. There is just something I like about them. I'm also typically way quicker on them. But for some of my sounds the only way I can get the desired sound is with virtual synths.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I played music and multiple instruments since I was a child and been in multiple bands and even orchestras. After studying audio engineering I became a freelancing and independent songwriter, producer, studio and live sound engineer.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: My working process is slightly different on every project, because every project needs a different set of skills. Mixing and mastering work is typically done remotely. For writing and producing I love to work with the client(s) in the same room, but I'm also doing a lot of skype/zoom/facetime and remote sessions, too.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: My studio setup is built around an 2019 16" Macbook Pro with Avid Pro Tools, Ableton Live and Logic Pro and the Universal Audio Apollo interface system (Apollo 8p, Apollo Twin Duo and Satellite Octo-Card). I rely on monitors and headphones from Neumann, Auratone and Focal. For producing, writing and recording I have a bunch of guitars and basses, real and virtual amps and pedals, a selection of analog synths, acoustic drums, percussion, a couple of nice microphones and a ton of virtual instruments & virtual synths at my disposal. For mixing and mastering I rely on plugins from Universal Audio, FabFilter, SoundToys, iZotope, Slate Digital, Waves, etc. With my setup I'm able to write, record & mix in my studio, at home or on the go.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: So many.. a couple of my favs: Ryan Tedder, blackbear, Machine Gun Kelly, The Weeknd, Halsey, Max Martin, Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff, Diplo, Benny Blanco

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I'm not a big fan of boundaries and genres. But most of my work is edgy pop, trap pop, alternative & hip-hop.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Probably starting a vibe, writing and re-writing vocal melodies & producing the track.

  17. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  18. A: Probably the first official single released by Fenris. It was a big step for the two of us. I advised with writing, did additional production to the beat created by a Friend of Fenris, recorded and produced the vocals and mixed and mastered the record.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: I will give my best to make songs that you're proud of.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Look for collaborators you click with. It will create better projects and it is obviously a lot more fun.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Always trust your instincts. If it feels right it is right and if it doesn't feel right change it.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: Positive vibes, great melodies, interesting sounds and whatever the client needs to finish it.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Most of the time I accompany my clients through the whole project from co-writing to producing, mixing, mastering and releasing the song.

  29. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  30. A: Can I sound like "..."? Well, you can sound like a whole lot of you, influenced by "..."

  31. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  32. A: The music (of course) and working with awesome artists and people in general.

  33. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  34. A: My Fender Jaguar, my Juno 106, my Macbook Pro, my Apollo Twin Duo and my Neumann TLM49 Mic.

  35. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  36. A: "How hard do you want this?"

  37. Q: How would you describe your style?

  38. A: Modern, edgy and song-focused.
