Interview with Sam Mbengi

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: For the most part I mix with a 'hierarchy of playback devices' that has been working for me lately, I start out on flat monitors to get an accurate sound, and further adjust down the ladder through car speakers, then reference headphones, and finally the small speakers like phones and laptops. Then I go back to the monitors to hear these adjustments and tweak further-more before landing on what I think is the final mix.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: Outside of a dedicated recording studio and me being a minimalist, my personal home setup is one of the 'cleanest' setups you'd probably ever see. I used to study interior design, so things are designed with thought and reason as well as functionality as far as acoustics so that it both looks good, simple, and sounds amazing.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: Listened to a whole lot of work done by Mike Dean, whos mixed for Beyoncé, Madonna, Kanye West, and even Travis Scott. He's pretty much the one I've looked up to as a mixing engineer. Listening to him talk about his process and listening to his work altogether is what shaped my sound in my early stages (and even now) of being an engineer.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: Mostly just editing and mixing of stems or multi-tracks. Making things sound good altogether in general.
