Interview with Nathaniel Jacobs

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Side chain the Bass or 808 to your kick drum. Drums nowadays need to be so punchy and in your face in every song. Side chaining allows the Kick to get in your face.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I work on every genre there is but the most common type of work I get is Pop, Hip-Hop (lots of Trap), and Rock.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Being a musician for over 15 years and playing three instruments has given me a very unique musical ear. In regards to production, I can hear things such as riffs, leads or ear candy that other people might not think off that can breathe life into a track. In regards to mixing, being a musician, I know that you want your song to sound exactly like you imagined it in your head. I feel that I have an advantage in getting to that destination.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: I typically like to listen to the source/original audio a few times to get an idea of what the client has given me. I then like to format and set up the session up for maximum efficiency. From this point, I like to tackle the most important/main elements in a song and work around them.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: My setup is quite simple. I do all my production and mixing in the box using various VSTs and Plugins. I also have my condenser microphone set up for sound design and various recording techniques.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: I tend to do two main projects for clients: Instrumental songs, such as Hip-Hop Beats and Pop song productions or a classic full track mix. However, I also work on a wide range of projects. I don't think there is a style/genre of music or project I have not worked on.

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: I promise that I will give all my time and effort to your project and make it the absolute best that I can. I believe that great projects are built on great communication and trust between collaborators. When you work with me, I will be with you all the way!

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I am a big fan of John Mayer. I love the way that he incorporates technicality of playing with emotion. Andrew Huang has played a big part in my growth and incorporation of sound design. Also, Lakey Inspired, a beat maker from the US was the one who inspired me to make beats. Bands like Anberlin, Saosin, From Indian Lakes, The 1975, Gates, Caspian, The Band CAMINO are some of the bands that I have influenced me the most.
