Singing, Mixing, Mastering

The Recovery System on SoundBetter

I'm a counter tenor who loves to sing and scream in genres of rock, punk, and metal. I am also an expert in mixing and mastering said genres. I work with Reaper 7 and use a collection of VSTs from Waves, Get Good Drums, Blacksalt Audio, and scatterings of other things.

I'm a mixing and mastering engineer based in Portland, and also a youtuber who does cover songs, as well as writing original emotional punk and metal songs. I've studied pro audio for 14 years, and have been a professional in the field for 8. I've mixed and mastered for bands from all over the PDX metro area, and have composed for many clients, including a song titled "I'm Your Captain Now (The Ancients)" which was featured in a popular Roblox RPG, Block Tales. The song has also been featured in livestreams and youtube videos made by the chaotic livestreamer, DougDoug.

Interview with The Recovery System

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm always working on whatever my next youtube video is, provided I don't have a client.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I just love to create. Creating music has always been fun, and in mixing, I love bringing a song to life.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: Since I work alone, it takes a very long time for me to get projects done. Some clients in their excitement love to ask for progress updates and are let down when I've only completed so much work. I play the guitar, piano, drums, bass, sing, scream, mix and master all on my own, and when I'm trying to uphold my standard of perfection, I might be working on one song for up to two weeks.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: Aggressive and emotional

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: If I ever had the opportunity, I'd love to work with First of October. A duo comprised of Rob Scallon and Andrew Huang. Either working with them as individuals, or to somehow be involved on a song would be a dream come true.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Get an education. Or watch educational content on the subject. Cause "use your ears" is simultaneously the best, but also least helpful advice someone can give. Learn how to use your ears. Learn what you need to listen for.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Punk and metal mostly. But I have also worked with artists you made hiphop, country, and gospel.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I bring the mind of a producer. I know what makes a song catchy, and sellable. I can spice up a song in a way that your audience will fall in love with. I also bring a punchy and powerful mix that kicks you in the chest and scratches the itch in your ears.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: In the world of audio, I find great inspiration from Aaron Sprinkle, who was worked with artists such as Anberlin, Lincoln Brewster, Aaron Gillespie, Acceptance, Relient K, and New Found Glory. In the world of YouTube, my greatest inspiration is Patty Walters from As It Is. He was the first YouTuber I've ever seen sing, play guitar, drums, bass, mix and master all on his own. Other names like Jonathan Young and Jared Dines have also served as great inspiration to also be the jack of all trades type.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Guest vocals and composing are what I'm most frequently commissioned for
