Interview with Alex Gonçalves

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: "Why don't we record separated one by one? Simple. If you are a band you are supposed to play together. Why should I record you separately and then try to pretend that you played together? Makes sense now? A band sounds always more tight when they're recorded in the same room, the musicians react to each other and the unisons are more precise. And finally, I don't to spend one entire month (or even more) recording 8 to 10 songs.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: For this one, I have to go to the misconception of the live recording. The first day of recording with any band it's tricky because I have to make them believe that is more than valid to record various instruments in the same room and that mic bleed is not your enemy!

  5. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  6. A: I mostly do the recording and mixing for bands and artists of every genre. I also work on projects just as mixer, or as recorder.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: Quite simple. There's a nice analogue mixer with a digital interface that receives all in's on a very small booth with a nice calibrated pair of monitors and a few outboard gear for processing and shit.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: I'm super driven by Vulpeck / The Fearless Flyers musicians and engineers. I also love the approach on genre and production of Scary Pockets and Scary Goldings. I'm love the work of William Caleb Parker and Moses Schneider. There are a few others. But these two guys are special for me.
