Chris is a MASTER. I have been privileged to work with him on dozens of projects. Many multi-platinum huge sellers. His knowledge, elegance, and taste are world-class. Patient, collaborative, full of ideas - plus his understanding of Music, it's history, and where it will be going in the new decade is absolutely astounding. Always a thrill to talk and work with him.

Chris has been writing my orchestral arrangements and conducting in the studio, as well as for my live Symphony performances, for many years. He also produced my "Cafe Carlyle" album in 2008. He is a brilliantly skilled composer, a world class artist and a dear friend.

Interview with Profile User 299044

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I started making music at the age of 4, when I learned how to read and write music and playing the recorder flute. At age 7 I started learning piano, and at age 13 trumpet. I went to music conservatory in Cologne, Germany and finished with a master's degree in composition. During my 20's I wrote arrangements for German Radio Big Bands and Radio Symphony Orchestras and composed underscore music for German films and TV shows. At the age of 29 I emigrated to Los Angeles where I've been living and working ever since, scoring TV films, arranging for recording artists and conducting orchestras. I've been professionally composing and arranging music now for 35 years.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: Pencil and score paper

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: Any music that utilizes strings, an orchestra or big band, or any type of live player ensembles.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: Arranging and Conducting

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: Usually I get a demo of the song that I'm asked to arrange. In some cases I get together with the artist to determine the key and direction of the arrangement before I start to write. Then I need about 3 days to write the arrangement and prepare a midi demo.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I write the arrangements in Finale, and I program the midi demos in ProTools using the Vienna Symphony Library for orchestral sounds.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Claus Ogerman, Quincy Jones, Johannes Brahms, Jeremy Lubbock, John Williams

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Arranging and conducting for any size ensemble of live musicians
