Interview with SOHTA Tsuchiya
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I glue sounds. This is a really tough question. Such a cliché but I'd say "What song calls for". Clarity and isolation of instruments, while maintaining connection between them. Heavy and tight bottom, with dense but clear mid range.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Recently moved to fully ITB set up, centered around Slate Raven MTi. ProTools HD 12 as my main tool, but I also work with Logic, Ableton Live, and Digital Performer. Plug-ins I use are UAD, Waves, McDSP, SlateDigital, Softube, etc., etc. Time to time, I go back to analog summing but Waves NLS and SlateDigital VCC serves the purpose for now.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop 80%, both acoustic and electric. (Sub-genre within the category "Pop" is so wide that I work with lots different, tho…)
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Dense mix with clarity. I believe these two completely opposite elements can co-exist.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Manny Marroquin, his dense sounds always surprise me and inspire me.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by listening to the demo/producer's mix everywhere, in my car, in the city walking around on iPhone, etc. That will give me the basic idea of what the song is about, so I get the vibe of the song. Then I put the ProTools session together, preview each tracks/stems, fine tune each of those. The most fun part starts there, a pure artistic process to play with balances, and draw automation to enhance the dynamics of the song. Once the mix is 95% completed, I send the mp3 to the client to evaluate for as long as you want in different environment. We go through revision processes until you are fully satisfied!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: 80% of my daily work is mixing, 10% mastering and 10% producing.
