Interview with Ivano Giovedì - Freelance Sound Engineer

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The work I'm most proud of is the recording and mixing of a soon-to-be-released album by Alejandro Escovedo. It was recorded in Italy in a poetic and inspiring space. I gave a lot of myself to that record and I hope it will be appreciated.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Definitely both. Digital today has reached a very high level of quality and its great flexibility allows it to keep up with current ways of working. However, some analogue instruments still remain unattainable and this is why knowing how to combine the two is a great advantage.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I promise my clients to take care of their song or album considering it as a work of art and not as a job. I promise to do my best to raise the communicative value of that work.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I graduated in "Sound and Recording Arts" at the Scuola di Alto Perfezionamento Musicale (Saluzzo) in 2006 and subsequently I worked at the Magister Studio Area (Preganziol, TV), Sergio Taglioni's StudioLab (Cascina, PI) and Stereosonika Recording Studio (Forlì). My main activity is music producer and sound engineer in studio environment even though I have occasionally served as sound engineer for live events. As freelance I work at Duna Studio (Russi, Ravenna, Italy), L'amor mio non muore (Forlì) and The Groundfloor Studio (Modena). I'm the owner of the Waveroof Studio (Castel Bolognese, Italy). I'm a professional since 16 years.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: It's not the quality of the tools that do a great job but it's the intention behind the concept you want to demonstrate. Art has a decisive, clear and crisp thought behind it.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I usually work with electro-pop, pop but also with folk, rock.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: My strongest skill is to understand the needs of the artist I work with and to traduce them through technical ways.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I contribute to giving to the song added value with my personality and experience.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: First of all I always listen to the song not as a sound engineer but trying to do it like a normal listener. I try to understand what it wants to communicate and how. I try to identify strong points and weak points, imagining how I can emphasize or resolve them. Then I proceed with mixing or mastering. I don't use "presets" or "templates", each song has its own history and nature so I try to adapt the processing to individual needs.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: My studio is a small home studio but technically equipped with high quality gear. The configuration is hybrid, i.e. it combines the use of digital workflow with signal processing through mastering-grade analog outboard. I own several types of monitors for critical listening, main monitors are Amphion one18 but I have also Yamaha NS-10M Pro.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: 80% of my work is related to mixing and mastering. I have an artistic approach to this work, not just a technical one. I contribute to giving added value with my personality and experience.
