Kirsten Evans on SoundBetter

Hi! My name is Kirsten Evans. I've sung on the NETFLIX Original film Apostle, art installations at the world's biggest arts festival (Venice Biennale) and I was score coordinator on the MARVEL movie Morbius (starring Jarred Letto). I'm super versatile - singing indie pop to film/ commercial music.

I've been a professional singer/ composer/ songwriter for 8 years. I specialise in female top lines (writing and singing), backing vocals, vocal arrangements, vocal recording and sampling projects for film and TV.

Originally trained as an opera singer, turn film/TV composer and sample library coder, to professional singer I have a brilliant knowledge of a wide variety of genres within music. I've worked on projects for NETFLIX, HULU, HBO Max, Amazon Prime and the BBC.

Interview with Kirsten Evans

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was the singer and co-composer for an art installation picked to represent Wales and the Venice Biennale when I was 19 years old. Over 33,000 people came to hear me sing as part of the installation. I had the opportunity to work with Turner Prize nominated artist James Richards, improvise vocals based off of a beautiful text also present as part of the installation and was featured on the BBC as part of the project.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: MY DEBUT ALBUM!!! Crazy! And I am writing the code for a selection of new sample libraries for various companies.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Basically all of the top rated female singers on here are brilliant!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both!! Each have their own benefits and each have their own drawbacks.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to deliver a high quality product.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love seeing how people react to my singing - it can bring up the most powerful feelings I've ever felt. Singing is my passion and I am privileged enough to get to do it for a living!

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "Can you send me multiple versions so I can pick which one I like?" My answer: sure but there might be an additional fee deepening on how many options you want over a certain limit.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Singing is easy.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Do you have a firm deadline? Do you need a fast turnaround? What is your budget? Can you provide me with a midi track as well as a mix minus the vocal line?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be clear on your deadline, and the style of music you want to create. But most of all... if you are unsure if I am right for you just ask and we'll have a chat!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, Logic, UAD interface, SM58 mic (they are indestructible), and an xlr cable.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as an opera singer, then worked in music departments on films for NETFLIX, HULU, HBO Max, Amazon Prime and more. Then I became a sample library developer and coder for the leading sample library company, Cinesamples. I have been singing throughout but now my focus is singing. I've been a profession musician for 8 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Lie back in a field and listen to the music. Be with your feelings.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Jacob Collier - imaging the crazy music you could come up with with Jacob as your collaborator!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Add silence. Don't overcrowd.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Indie pop is the music I love to sing the most, but in film/TV I love creating vocals for horror, drama and tension scores. I also create a lot of vocal sound banks for film/TV scores as well as improvising / singing top lines.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My musicality. I've had a lot of musical training and education that help me with my technique and musical understanding. Film composers - I normally know what you want just by listening to your cue before you even mention it... haha

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Emotion and a unique voice!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I work best when I am provided with midi tracks, click tracks, mixes minus vocals and a score (score where relevant). What takes it to another level is when someone can talk to me about what emotion they want from their music and then I'll practice with this in mind until I am ready to record. I'll do a few takes and (where possible) send over a selection for you to select from (happens more with film music / improvised music).

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I keep it simple with great mics, preamps and a space filled with light and plants to keep me inspired.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am inspired by Jacob Collier, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, the vocal ensemble Voces8 and anyone that has written something that is great to sing.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: A mixture of improvised vocals for film/TV and re-recording top vocal lines for demos.
