Interview with Matthew Sparks

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I just finished producing a couple of singles with a new terrific Hip Hop and Trap sound, not long ago, i had a collab with a huge star and successful singer in Israel "Tina Eve" and I produced a couple of Dance songs for the singer. I am proud of it because my career started in the British rock genre, back then I composed and produced tracks that sound like Coldplay and snow patrol and it gave me a lot of skills, especially the catchy melodies. and today after I experienced producing every genre possible, I bring everything I know into hip hop to make interesting and unique hip hop trap and r&b songs.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: Versatility.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: Juice WRLD, Internet Money, The Kid Laroi, Ian Dior, Post Malone My favorite producer is Kanye West. I think he is the most transformational artist in urban music in his generation. I also love the works of producers like Pharrell and Scott Storch whose sound transcended hip hop and translated beautifully into pop music. On the more indie end of the spectrum, producers like Clams Casino (A$AP Rocky, Imogen Heap) are definite reference points when it comes to creating lush, texturized sonics that feels expensive and carefully curated. My favorite songwriter of all time is Max Martin (if you don't know who he is, you should).

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: It starts with speaking with the artist and understanding the sound they are looking for. It ends with me translating that vision into a musical reality and providing you with a banger! Everything in between is a professional secret ;) I hear a reference and the overall main genre and then I start to copy the sound. For each track, I start from zero, find the right sounds, write, play and record every instrument that fits the production. usually, I don't wait for the final mix, I already mix each instrument that I use at the moment that I record it.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: I produce a full and unique production (beat / full instrumental) that fits exactly to the client's preference. from step 1 to step 10, I write, play, and record every instrument of the production and send the audio files with already mixed sound. I am a hip hop, RnB, and pop producer, which means I "make beats" and compose all the music, except for the lyrics. Most clients reach out with a rough idea of the kind of song they want, often providing reference tracks from existing artists that show the kind of vibe they are looking for. Some clients come with existing melodies or lyrics they wrote either Acappella or to another beat. I help these clients by "re-producing" the track, i.e. building a brand new beat around their lyrics

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: I bring a catchy melody that combined emotional inspiration to every song that I make. I believe that "catchy" is not enough and huge hits come from the heart in the first place and that's why I combine them both in my productions

  13. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  14. A: Today I give my full focus to the Hip hop R&b and electro-pop, commercial genres in order that every beat that I make will sound like a smash hit

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: When you hire me you can expect the best treatment - everything will be custom made to your specifications, no short cuts, no excuses. I keep you posted at all steps of the process and make sure you are always 100% satisfied with the product.

  17. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  18. A: can you make it sound like "reference"? yes, I can.

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: it's not simple at all to keep it simple, but eventually, I do it with each and every one of my projects

  21. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  22. A: what is your reference and what's the story behind the lyrics

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Laptop, Earphones, External Daw, External Preamp, and my Guitar.

  25. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  26. A: Mickey Shiloh - amazing songwriter, glowing personality, and solid work ethic.

  27. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  28. A: Both, because each one of them has an advantage and disadvantage , the key is to know to use your equipment at the highest skills possible

  29. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  30. A: I Like to turn the vision into reality. physically need to make music as a creative release - it's very therapeutic, so the fact that I'm getting paid to do it is just amazing. I also like the independence of being my own boss and working at my own place

  31. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  32. A: Take the time to clearly communicate your vision and expect nothing less than excellence.

  33. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  34. A: My path to music was an unusual one. After graduating from college I had a career in business and finance, and it took me a whole 8 years to understand that 'suit & tie' just wasn't what I wanted to do with my life. While I always messed around with songwriting and music production since an early age, I made music my full-time job in 2012 and haven't looked back since.

  35. Q: How would you describe your style?

  36. A: I like productions that are simple but "expensive" sounding. I take time to make sure the sounds I use are full, rich, and expressive but I also make sure I don't over-produce records and leave room for the vocals to stand out, whether it's pop, rap, or RnB.

  37. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  38. A: If they were still alive: Juice WRLD, Freddie Mercury, Cort Cobain

  39. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  40. A: if it's simple, it works

  41. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  42. A: Hip Hop, RnB, and Pop

  43. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  44. A: I have my own studio in Haifa, Israel. I use Cubase as my main production software. Beyond just producing, I am also a proficient guitar & piano player.
