Seán Egan on SoundBetter

Recently completed a degree in Creative Music Production, centred around producing 3 original tracks and obtained first class honours.

Offering Mixing/Mastering, specialising in electronic and soundtrack type genres. Also would love to work on Podcasts.

Ultimately, I'm open to working in any genre. I've studied music production for 4 years, and have various collaborated as a composer, foley artist, sound designer and more across multiple short animations and a short film while studying. Furthermore, I produced 3 original tracks to a professional standard, which was the final project that I chose to help me obtain my degree.

I had the pleasure of working with Seán in my final year of study creating a short animated film. He is great with deadlines and following briefs. His knowledge of music composition and sound design really helped lift our film to the next level!

Interview with Seán Egan

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Chat to me first. I'm happy to answer any questions, but ultimately I want you to have confidence that I'm the right person for you. Ideally, I would want for us to have a collaborative approach, and I want everybody to be comfortable with that dynamic before starting.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I'm currently working on an animation about a young boy and his place in the universe. I am the sound designer, so everything audio-wise other than score was done by me. I'm incredibly proud of the atmospheres and environments I created. My director gave me freedom to create, and I used many organic elements to bring a fictional world to life, and help make the animation inviting and welcoming to children.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Currently I'm working on a series of songs to release for myself, and also on 2 animations with students from Swinburne College in Australia.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Depends how committed I want to be. If I want to know something is finished, analog. If I want to experiment and maybe come back and tweak it, digital. Ultimately digital is faster, but analog is a huge amount of fun, if not more difficult to do well.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to deliver a mix, on time, and to always provide feedback as soon as possible. I'm not just providing a product, but also a service, so while I'm working with you, I'll give you as much information as you want and respond as quick as possible, as I feel that is the best way to a polished final product.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Adaptive Creativity. Most clients have a brief, and I enjoy taking that brief and making something that they wouldn't expect, yet fits the brief.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: A lot of customers ask how I approach my work, and where do I start? The short answer is that I spend as much time preparing the project as I can before actually starting. Why begin to bake a cake and then realise the ingredients aren't there? Preparation is an area I focus on a lot for this reason

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: "Fix it in the mix" is a phrase I've heard loads while studying, both as a joke and a serious suggestion. If the mix is to be good, the source must be good too. It's no different to buying a brilliant guitar amp, and buying a disgusting, used, barely functioning guitar - the problem is not the amp.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is the end goal for the project? How much creative freedom will I have?

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Acoustic guitar. Portable Recorder (with unlimited batteries). Audio Technica M50x. My laptop (his name is Francis). iLok (Because I will not be happy if I can't use my software)

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Just finished college. I've studied music at various levels for 15 years, including college, school and private education.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Electronic, dark, yet provocative and emotional

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: If I had to pick just one - Keshi. Not only is his music very beautiful, but so is his persona. I feel working with him would not only develop my music, but also me.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Be tidy. Both in building the session and in the choices made. For example; If I use 1 plugin EQ well instead of using 3 EQs, not only does that improve the workflow, but makes it very easy to compare and contrast.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Electronic music and soundtracks for animations, or even games.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I'm very methodical, and as precise as possible. Every decision has a purpose and is aimed at making the final product better.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I'm an artist first, and producer second. I try to find creative solutions to issues, and spark new ideas as often as possible.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I like to clearly define each stage. For mixing, I like to think of it as a house. I lay a solid foundation, usually either in the drums or bass, and build upwards and outwards from there. Ideally, I don't like to move backwards, which means I don't move on until I'm satisfied with the sound of the current section/area I'm working on.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Mac running Logic Pro and Pro Tools. Use guitar pedals and plug-ins to create and process sound.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: CLA, Alesso, Calvin Harris, Joji, Keshi, Darci, deadmau5

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Mixing/Mastering, specifically for electronic and soundtrack type genres, or for foley/sound design.
