Interview with Diego Cortinovis

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: We have worked on many important projects for us, collaborating with artists from all over the world, from Tel Aviv to Russia, England, Brazil...(...). Our role for many jobs was production and mixing, for others only mastering or others only mixing, it depends on what you have to do, the important thing is to do it to the best of your ability!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: We are working on some (our own) Ethno Deep Electronic music projects.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Why? .... Why not?

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: No promises, it's the work talking. We give our all to satisfy the customer.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: See how with little, a track can transform and become really beautiful

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: 1 - Do you have a reference? 2 - Are you possibly willing to edit some part of the track if there are problems that cannot be solved in the mix?

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: No one in particular, but with people who are open-minded and willing to work to improve their product. Finding someone who at all costs does not want to change a sound or a part of a song because "I like it this way" even if it is incorrect or poorly done, is the worst way to get poor quality work from the beginning to the end of the chain.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: The best advice in production is sound choice. Carefully selecting the inserted sounds already makes 80% of the success of your work. A "wrong" sound risks ruining everything else. My typical phrase is "Wrong kick, bad track."

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: The understand what the customer wants and look for a solution to deliver what they are looking for.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: The mix is not that magical something that turns a poorly made product into something gorgeous. If there is a good production at the base, the mix is that extra something, where you go to balance the various volumes, give a character and space to the sounds, create the right depth and malgam that you need to make sure that everything is in the right place. Same goes for mastering. If the previous work is not well done, very little is done, indeed, very often the problems are exacerbated. Good production, good mix, good master = professional result.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: First, let's listen to the song to understand "what we're going to mix/master". Then we do a critical listening, trying to understand where and how it can be improved. From there, the approach is the careful analysis of each track (if stems) and the beginning of the real work.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: Our studios are divided to maintain a fair balance between what competes for the mix or master. Both rooms are acoustically treated in terms of both isolation and frequency response, allowing us to have a linear listening in any phase of work. Each machine in our studies has its own reason and is used with care and technique to ensure the best performance. We also have a whole suite of official plugins, top of the range on the market, which we use to get our particular tone. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: The greatest inspiration comes not so much from the "producer" or "artist" but from the song itself, how it is interpreted, mixed and mastered.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Our most common work involves mixing and/or mastering. We have a very decisive approach on the track, based on the needs of the clients
