Interview with Clemens Kossakowski

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Try to articulate a detailed description of what you want your song to sound like.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Most of the time I am working on genres like Indie Pop, R&B, HipHop or Trap. However I am not limited to those genres and am happy to try out new things.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Mixing in mono (or checking your mix in mono from time to time) can be a very useful technique to result in a truthful sound.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Apart from applying usual mixing to a song i will (only if wanted by the client) propose creative descisions which would fit the song in my oppinion.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: I will mix your song/s to take them on a high quality level. (You can see my work process a few questions below).

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: After i recieve the stems of a clients song i will start by getting the levels and the panning right. After that I'll apply essential EQ and compression, followed by effects like reverb or delay (or any given effects that are desired by the client). Along side the process I will use a reference track (which can be specified by the client) to match a professional sound. Then I'll enhance the mix using automation and detailed tweaks to small parts of the song. At the end I will check the mix on multiple different speaker systems (like studio monitors, headphones, laptop speakers or on my phone) to make sure it sounds good everywhere.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I got a home studio with high quality studio monitors by ADAM AUDIO (T7V), an Audient iD44 Audio Interface and the very good and famous beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones. In one of my rooms corners i got a treated vocal booth with a Rode NT1-A Microphone. At the backside of my studio you can find an acoustic upright piano by Wendl & Lung. Next to the piano there is my Ibanez strat guitar and a BOSS Katana mkII Amplifier. I also have a MIDI-Keyboard, which i use to record some of my synths or keys.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: A lot of inspiration comes from the songwriter and audio engineer Louis Bell (who has worked with artists like Post Malone, Kanye West, Camila Cebello, etc.). To me its very inspiring to see how he is not only engineering songs he didn't make, but also writing a lot of them. On a small scale I am doing the same thing. Another source of inspiration is Andrew Watt. He is an incredibly talented songwriter and producer who works with artists and other musicians in person, which is one of the most fun thing to do when it comes to writing songs.
