James Goulet

Mix Engineer

James Goulet on SoundBetter

Professional, personable, and dedicated mix engineer who will work with you to turn your vision into reality. Based out of Nashville, I have been mixing music for about 4 years, with education from Belmont University and Berklee College of Music in Boston. I will work in most genres, but am most comfortable with rock, pop, and country.

Hey! I'd love to work with you to get your track sounding great. As far as pricing, I'm very flexible and we can definitely work something out.

My style is definitely to stay true to the recording, and honor what it is trying to be while achieving a full sound. If there is a need to get creative, I can hold that down as well. I have been mixing for four years or so, and I specialize in pop, rock, and country, but willing to work in any genre.

Give me a shot and I think you'll be surprised by the results. There are some crappy engineers on SoundBetter that are charging far too much for their costs, which is seriously annoying, and I can promise you that won't be me. I look forward to working with you!

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Interview with James Goulet

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: At the moment, I am working closely with a country artist, Gage Marvel, on his first EP. I am also a member (bass player) of the band Silent Disco, an indie pop group. I love playing live with them and being part of the amazing productions by the amazing Blaine Ruth.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on networking and nailing down credits. Getting my name out there!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Mario Borgatta is an amazing engineer who I love working with and would recommend to everyone. He is a real powerhouse mixer and someone I aspire to be like.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: A combination of both! Hybrid mixing seems to be the way to go these days.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will do everything I can to make your song sound great, however many revisions it might take.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love seeing a song through to sounding radio ready. Listening to what I started with and then the final product is one of the best feelings in the world.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Will you make my song sound better? Yes!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mix engineers can make a shitty record sound awesome. True to a certain extent, but a little misconstrued.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I'll ask you your vision for the song really. That to me is most important. Obviously there are other small technical questions, but everyone asks those.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: While I may not have a massive credit list, try to see past that and give me a shot. I really think you'll be surprised, given some of the horrible work I've seen on this platform for outrageous prices.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, monitors, interface, SM58, and an XLR cable.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I'm currently pursuing a degree in Audio Engineering at Belmont University, but have received certificates from Berklee College of Music in Boston. As of now, it's been four years or so.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I like to think my style is sort of a mix between my influences, sort of a synthesis of multiple genres. See Rush, John Mayer, Dave Matthew's, Frank Sinatra, etc.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with John Mayer or Dave Matthews Band. Everything they do is like magic!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: 'Fix it in the mix' is not real. Don't say it.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I'm willing to work on basically anything. In the past, I've worked with clients all over the world. Mixing songs in a language you don't understand can be challenging, but I made it happen. I am most comfortable in pop, rock, and country.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Staying true to the song, and your vision for it. I guess working in any genre is good too.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I like to think that I produce a natural sound with a lot of records. I'm all about honoring the recording, but bringing out its best qualities. If you want me to get creative, I can do that too, though!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Get all the tracks in Logic, clean everything up, and get going. Gotta nail down the vision for the song first!

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I mix almost exclusively in the box, but do have access to a huge amount of studio hardware through my college. I'll be mixing your track through an SSL 2+ interface, Logic Pro, and a set of Yamaha HS5's.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am inspired by Jack Joseph Puig, Dave Pensado, Don Was, and many more.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I am primarily a mixing engineer, working closely with clients to understand the vision for their song.
