Interview with Jack Kenworthy

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I’m really proud of a Colouring song called 'Lune'. It was born from a very personal story and I made it alongside my best friends Gianluca Buccellati (Arlo Parks, The Marias) and Mikko Gordon (IDLES, Arcade Fire), and together we built it into something cinematic and moving - proof that authenticity always translates when you treat the song with care.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A mix of projects - I've just written a song for LANY's new album 'Soft' called 'Sound Of Rain' which I'm glad to see making its way in the world. I'm also finishing a new record for my own artist project, Colouring, and producing tracks for a few up-and-coming indie pop artists which I'm really excited for people to hear. There’s also some sync-focused work for film and TV in the pipeline!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes - there are some brilliant session players and writers/vocalists on here I’ve either worked with or followed closely. I’m always happy to recommend the right fit depending on the project.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I love the tactile feel and warmth of analog gear, but digital allows for endless creativity and precision. The magic is in knowing when to use each.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To approach every project with care, taste, and honesty - and to deliver something that feels timeless, not trend-driven.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The moment when a song clicks - when it suddenly feels like it’s saying exactly what it was meant to say. Chasing that feeling is so addictive!

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: “Can you make my track sound professional and ready for release?” A: Absolutely - but more importantly, I’ll make sure it feels personal and true to you as an artist and your vision. That’s what makes a record stand out.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That producing or mixing is just about polishing sounds. It’s really about storytelling - helping emotion come through in a way that feels effortless.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask: What artists or songs inspire this project? What do you want the listener to feel when they hear it? Do you have a rough demo or lyrical concept? Where are you hoping to take this release (independent, label, sync, etc.)? It helps me tailor the process and sound to the artist’s intent.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Find someone whose work and taste you connect with emotionally, not just technically. The best collaborations come from shared instinct and trust, not just gear lists.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My laptop with Ableton Upright Piano OP1 Synthesizer SM7B Mic Hofner Bass With that, I'd have everything I need to make some lovely records!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been making records for over a decade. I started out as an artist and songwriter, learning production as a way to articulate my own ideas. Over time, that naturally evolved into producing and mixing for others, as I found I loved helping artists shape their vision as much as expressing my own.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Cinematic yet intimate. I like to create space around the vocals so the emotion breathes, while weaving in textures and details that make the sound world feel immersive and alive.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to collaborate with Brian Eno. His ability to push artists into new places whilst constantly evolving himself as a composer/producer is incredibly inspiring. I'd also just like to have a coffee with him and talk music/life!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don’t rush the emotion. Technical perfection matters less than capturing a performance or sound that feels real. Often, the first take with imperfections carries more truth than the fifth one that’s sonically cleaner.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I mostly work across indie, pop, and cinematic soundscapes - often in that space where organic and electronic textures meet. Think emotional indie pop, atmospheric electronica, or introspective singer-songwriter material with a sense of space and intimacy.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I'd like to think its bringing cohesion to a song - both emotionally and sonically. I have a strong ear for detail and tone, but I never lose sight of the bigger picture or what the song is trying to say.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I focus on capturing honesty. For me, its so important for a song communicate its emotional core while giving it polish and atmosphere. Whether I’m producing, mixing, or co-writing, I aim to find that balance between depth and accessibility, where the listener feels both the story and the sonics.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Every project starts with a conversation. I like to understand an artist’s vision, influences, and emotional intent before touching any sound. From there, I’ll usually sketch out initial ideas, whether it be production layers, arrangement directions, or topline concepts, and then collaborate closely until the track feels authentic, moving, and complete.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work from a hybrid studio setup, combining both analogue warmth with digital precision. My main tools include Ableton Live and Logic Pro X, with a UAD Apollo interface, Barefoot monitors, and a selection of analog synths, pedals, and outboard gear. I am based in the British countryside where my space is designed for creative flow - comfortable, inspiring, and sonically tuned for both production and mixing.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by artists and producers who balance emotion and texture — people like The Blue Nile, Jon Hopkins, early Coldplay records, Bon Iver, Brian Eno, James Blake, and Thom Yorke. I love when music feels both intimate and cinematic at the same time.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most often, I’m producing and/or mixing records for artists looking to bring emotional depth and sonic clarity to their songs. That could mean taking a demo and developing it into a fully realised track, or refining an existing production to make it feel immersive, dynamic, and radio-ready. But I also really enjoy top-lining on other people's tracks!
