Interview with Rob "Nimbus" Middleton

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: Black and Silver LA 1176, Tube-Tech CL 1b, Pultec Eq, 1073 Neve Pre, API 550B

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I worked on my first full length project where I recorded majority of, mixed and mastered it. I am proud of it because it was a period where I got stumped a lot on some of the mixes but I learned how to overcome speed bumps like technical difficulties and making critical mix decisions and have used it as a lesson learned and have grown from it.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I am currently working on a few projects with a bunch of local artist in my area.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Hybrid since you can get that analogue sound and still have all the editing and automation benefits of digital.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise you that I will do my best to take your music from that packaged space ship and to the stars and beyond.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love working on music period.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: So what exactly is mixing? My response is that making a song is like baking a pizza. Recording is gathering all the ingredients such as the vocals, instruments, and any other pieces of audio that go with the song. While mixing is tossing the dough, spreading the sauce on it, adding cheese, pepperoni's and any other special toppings you want. Then mastering is taking that pizza you just put together and popping in that 350 degree oven to be cooked and consumed by the person its being served to.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Understanding exactly what the process of mixing is and how important is in order for your music to be successful.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What vision do you have for the project? Where do you want this project to go? Do you have a song of reference?
