Interview with Marcus Porter
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My passion is for soul and funk music, but I enjoy playing most styles! Pop, rock, jazz, fusion and hip hop are some of the other regular styles that I play
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: As a bass player, I find that I'm able to sit back and get a good feeling for the song as a whole, and can use my years of experience to take that song wherever it needs to go.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with Abelton Live and Logic X. I've been recording my own music for over 15 years so am well experienced, and I know how to get great results quickly.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: People like Rob Mullarkey - he's a monster bass player, but also just generally a musical genius! The sort of guy who is great at everything he turns his hand to.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Live performances and touring make up the bulk of my work. I also do studio sessions, and can record high quality takes from my home studio. I'm also a beat maker, producing my own music and producing for other artists as well.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently writing, recording and touring with my band HOWES3. We play a mashup of funk, hip hop, jazz, fusion and gospel, and are steadily gaining an online following. Our debut album will be released in April 2020.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The opportunity to play with great musicians and make music that I'm proud of.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I studied music at Chichester College from 2006, then moved to Brighton to study at BIMM in 2008. Since then I've been working as a freelance musician, working with as many different people along the way as possible!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Groove based, raw, but smooth at the same time. I like to find the perfect balance between the rhythm section and complimenting the melody.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Someone like Cory Henry, because of the pure funk he creates with his band!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My timing and feel, and ability to lock in with other musicians
