Interview with Daniel Bagutti

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My project. Daniel Bagutti Quartet. I worked with amazing artists and all of them have a huge experiences working with international names. And I was the band leader and I handled everything making me more confident in what I do.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My album. Just finished recording, mixing and mastering. Now the promotion and touring plans has started.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I’m new here...

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Don’t really know how to answer but when you use the digital I always try to be more natural as possible.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will help you to find the right sound for your songs!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Literally everything. Being around music, musicians and being behind the drums, makes me happy.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Maybe people think that when I say “can I play what I feel? Or you want me to play your drum line?” This might sound that I play like random, but in that way I mean that I would play what the music needs. Perfect example the song “Come when I call” by John Mayer (straightest drum line ever but very effective!... same speech regarding AC/DC songs: very simple drum line but super effective!)

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Do I have the freedom to play what I feel or do you want a Strict drum line? Can I put some salt and pepper?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Try to find the guy who plays the right thing for your stuff. And of course hire somebody that is flexible... I mean find somebody that can ply a large scale of genres.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Practice pad, drums sticks, and Wilson.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started to be a professional drummer since 2010, after my studies with private teachers. Before that I was a chef ;) but I’ve always played the drums since I was 3 years old

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Many people tell me that I have a unique style because after they see me playing, they always say that I’m so relaxed and joyful after the playing. When I record I want to reach the perfection.. so I can they’ll I’m a perfectionist.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: John Mayer. I think he’s everything that I have said so far.. he always plays the right! Not too much and not too least. Always on the perfect spot!

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Try to find what the music needs... try to don’t overload with unnecessary informations the music.. colors and stuff are good though.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Nowadays Jazz and Latin-Jazz. I used to record a lot of pop, rock and blues

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Listening and trying to understand what music needs.. not too much and not too least.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I think that every songs need his own mood and way to play the music, whether is the drums, or piano or other instruments.. any song needs the right playing, right mood and of course right style of playing it.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I have 3 differents studios. 1 is my home studio where I have my own loved drums where I can play and record all kind of music.. Then my second studio I do mostly funk and blues recordings and the third one (because the sound of the room etc..) i record rock songs. I always work with Logic Pro.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: I can say that I have a very large scale of musicians and music that inspire me. Some days I’m totally into jazz.. some days into rock, some days latin and so in for 2-3 genres of music. I’m very flexible because I get tired to listen the same music for more than 1 day:

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Helping the clients to find the groove and drums sound that fits the songs that they want me to play.
