Interview with Heikki Vihersalo
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: BOTH! There is something you still cannot get with pure digital but you get pretty damn close. I could work completely ITB, but I do have a chance to bring a little bit of that analog favor, so why wouldn't I?
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to be the guy who you can trust and the one that will help you no matter what to get the best possible results.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Loud and wide! I like it when things sound huge and I tend to push things to its limits. I'm not afraid to do drastic changes if the song needs it. I'm also a big fan of raw emotion and dirty sounds. Clean and surgical doesn't suit my style.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I do mastering for all genres. However, I don't mix any other genres than pop(ish) or hip-hop(ish) music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My job is to enhance the good parts of a song and bury the bad. And that is what I'm really good at. I know how things should sound and I'm not afraid to push things to its limits if needed.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Ed Sheeran no questions asked. Great performer, amazing songwriter... One of my favorite artists of all time.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Emotion and amazing performance is THE key to a great song! I would take a bad recording with good performance over bad performance every time. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to work FAST! But I also want to get as much as emotion out of the song as I can. The typical workflow is the following: first I get the files and the song from the client. Next, what I like to do is to have a chat with the artist. Just to get an understanding of what the artist is looking for. The third step is to actually start mixing or mastering. From there every project is different. Communication with the artist is the key.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a hybrid setup but most of my work is in the box. If needed I have few Pultec clones that I can use to bring warmth to a song but everything else is completely ITB. Great monitoring is my most important tool.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I really love hard-hitting drums and well-produced vocals. CLA and Serban Ghenea are the top engineers who have done all of my favorite records.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I work with a lot of producers and other mixing engineers by mastering their music. My main goal is to make peoples work sound better and more balanced. Another side of my business is helping artists to sound amazing by mixing their music.
