Interview with Jamie Ellis

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: Definitely a BluGuitar Amp1, MXR GT-OD, Gibson Les Paul, CryBaby 535Q and of course, a Tuner!

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: I've been told I rock like Jimmy Page, have B.B King blues and funk like Nile Rogers. So somewhere in-between all of those.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: I recorded guitars for my original Blues Rock band, Sun House at Metropolis Studios, London. Really proud of how those guitars sound. They've got a real bite to them!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: It all depends on the gear. You can't beat a classic Marshall or Fender amp; but there's something about crisp digital delays that I just love.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: If you're not happy, I'm not happy. I want to give my clients exactly what they envision, nothing less.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love working for myself! Being self employed is fantastic! Every day is different.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I started playing guitar at a very young age. Then went on to study music at GCSE, A-Level and at university, achieving a First Class BAHons in Guitar Performance from ACM, Guildford. I started recording whilst at university for friends and my own bands; learning recording tips from producer friends and tutors. Eventually, people around the university and outside started booking me for sessions.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Without a doubt, Nile Rogers!

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: You can never fix it in post!

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Usually original Rock and Blues tracks or Disco remixes.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Tough question! Either playing old school blues or Nile Rogers style comping.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Definitely Rob Harris, Tim Pierce, RJ Ronquillo, Nile Rogers and Adam Goldsmith. Those guys have played on some of my favourite records! Fantastic musicians!

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: It varies from recording original material for artists and bands to funk comping over producers remixes.
