Interview with Hew G.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked on a BitLife project recently with Song House and it was an amazing day. Multiple songs made that were all super dope! Tongue in cheek, impactful, and real to life. Truly holding up a mirror. I was a songwriter and a rapper on this project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on an album and some events to give back to the community using my platform and music.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'd recommend Nicholas P(2DEEP) and Kyle Jefferson(Krispy Kyle/JF). Both of them are incredible producers and Kyle is a phenomenal artist and songwriter as well!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! I love digital because of the quick workflow and endless capabilities but analog has a feeling that is difficult to replicate even with the advancement of technology. The energy of the room is truly captured with analog and that'll never change.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to work as hard as I can to deliver the highest quality product possible. Making changes as needed and working together to reach the end goal.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like the most about my job is being able to create something that can potentially make an impact on someones life. Music is really special. Its the one thing that is constant in helping people through tough times and support during celebrations.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The question that Im asked the most is if I can keep the music clean. I always say yes! I hardly curse in my music as it is so its not a tall order.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about me that Ive been breaking is that even though I rap. I can use my poetic skills and knack for melodies to write songs in any genre.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask my prospective clients if theres anything I should shy away from while working on the project.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Communicate everything you need to the best of your ability and dont be deterred by the posted prices and credits that we have. I can primarily speak for myself but I love making music. The hustle is real but the money is truly a blessing and a bonus. We can work with a budget if our price is too steep.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I was on a desert island WITH ELECTRICITY. Id bring my computer, interface, guitar, headphones, and microphone.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path has been a wild ride for sure. I started off just learning how to write poems. Those eventually turned into raps and led me to focusing on my delivery as I progressed. I have a mentor who produced for Gucci Mane, Migos, Lil Wayne, etc.... He brought me out to LA where I got to rub elbows with some of my idols and creatives I revered. I learned a lot about the creative process while out there. I moved to Nashville and put my head down for a couple of years and landed my first sync placement. From there I signed my first co-pub deal and got over 30 syncs and songwriting placements while growing as a songwriter with Song House Co. With Song House, I performed and spoke on a panel at TEDxNashville in 2022. I also wrote for the Denver Broncos, Steph Curry, Toys for Tots, and more! As of late, I have been writing songs at Warner Chappell and SONY. Ive been making music seriously for 7 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I am a melodic hip hop artist. I love being clever and Im a sucker for a good melody.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Kendrick Lamar. He is very calculated and I'd love to be apart of and learn from an intentional project.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more. All you need is 2 chords and the truth to make something important.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I typically work on hip hop, pop, r&b, and EDM music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Rapping is my strongest skill with songwriting in multiple genres being a close-second.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring the taste of a child who grew up around funk, soul, and r&b but listens to and writes hip hop, trap, modern r&b, country, rock, and pop music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process depends on what Im doing. If I am writing and top-lining, I listen to the first 20 seconds of the production and load it up immediately. Then I start recording into Logic as I rap or sing lyrics and sentiments for a couple of lines or however far I get. Then I go back and refine everything that I have. Get to the end. Listen and redeliver and rewrite specific lines. Then I'll add harmonies and adlibs as needed. If Im helping someone write a song. I'll listen to their song a good 3-5 times and see where I can step in and help the song hit a little harder. When producing. I'll find a reference to what the client needs or listen to the reference given to me about 3 times and create something in that vein without ripping directly from it.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My setup is a M4 Mac Mini computer, Apollo Twin X interface, Vanguard V4 microphone, AT MH40x & AT MH50x headphones, Arturia Keylab49, Logic 12, and a Fender Squire guitar.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by most artists and musicians but the main ones are: Chance The Rapper, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Michael Jackson, Motown Records, Quincy Jones, Jeremih, and Ty Dolla $ign
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
