Interview with Kim

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: Soulful voice, big vocal range, clear-cut, memorable melodies, poetic yet easy to digest lyrics.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I will rewrite the song until they are satisfied with it.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: That I get to be creative!

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That it takes a lot of time (although sometimes it does for various reasons). I wrote my debut single 'Too Close To The Sun' in one evening.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Out of curiosity, I'll ask what they plan on doing with the song.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Don't be afraid to throw out any ideas or titles. I promise I can write any idea or title.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: A guitar would probably be all I'd need on a desert island.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I'm quite new in the game. I studied songwriting for a year and graduated in 2019. I launched my solo career in march 2020.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Christina Aguilera. Listening to her voice was what gave me initial spark of passion for singing.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Does what you hear, move you emotionally? If not, try to come up with something that does. In all humility, I think its that simple.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Radio friendly pop.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: My former teacher always told me I have a special talent for writing melody.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I love mapping out the song structure and setting the scene for each section. This makes the writing process so much easier and enjoyable.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: I usually start with a concept, and figure out how I can tell a story around this idea with wordplay and metaphors, all the while focusing on describing how the story is sensed, in order to allow the listener to be submerged in the song. Then, I'll write lyrics for each section, and finally the melody. I always focus on making melodic and rhythmic hooks, and ask myself if the thing I created actually makes me feel something or not.

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: I have an iMac, with an Apogee duet set up in an acoustically treated room. Mics include a Neumann U87, Shure SM57 and a Røde NT1A.

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: From a songwriting perspective I'd have to say Max Martin, Julia Michaels, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Ed Sheeran.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: I write lyrics, melodies and chord progressions.
