Interview with GHOST

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: 1) Full music production arranged in full song form (R&B|Soul, Pop) and/or beats for all rap sub-genres (Trap, Boom-Bap, Sample Based, etc.), usually in one of the common contemporary popular song arrangement structures. I work heavily in the Urban/Pop Genre. 2) Songwriting - Writing Lyrics and Composing music to fit...in either order. 3) Mixing those same songs and or mixing songs that were sent to me already completed and needing mixing!

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Even though I'm completely "In The Box ".......I'd say Both! Cheeseburger or fries?............if you can have it...get BOTH!

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Rap and Ultra Modern R&B (or TrapSoul...people refer to it differently) and UrbanPop, produced and mixed with that warm Richness/Depth of sound without sacrificing Clarity. I know we're not in the 1970's, however, I admire the detailed Instrument Selection and Lush mixes(think Stevie Wonder, Earth,Wind, and Fire, etc...) I'm completely ITB (without any vintage gear - which I greatly appreciate), technology has allowed us to achieve something pretty close to the "Tape" and "Analog gear" sound. Applying this to Modern Urban and Pop records sounds AMAZING!

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: -iMac and MacBookPro -Logic, Pro-Tools(occasionally), Maschine -Many of the Top Instrument VST's and Mixing Plug-ins from Native Instruments, East West, Slate, Waves, Izotope, UAD, Soundtoys, Omnisphere/Serum/Nexus/Blue/Albino/Sylenth/Absynth/lots of Sample Libraries -Motif / M-50 / Fantom - outboard workstations -MiktekCV4 or PelusoVTB Avalon737 BurlB2 RME YamahaNS-10's/HS8's Focal Twin6Be -Treated space accommodating 4

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I work until you have arrived at complete satisfaction with all details. I must have your artistic project express what YOU want!

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: People ask which of the functions you can handle. I'm comfortable with being a musician, producer, writer, vocal producer, mix engineer, and mastering eng. I'm also flexible with flowing in and out of those roles and working with others' contributions - I love to listen and learn - it's art, it's business......but, MOSTLY it's relationships!

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: For first timers, there can sometimes be a blurry line in their differentiation between - musician, producer(or beatmaker...depending on level of involvement in song process), writer, vocal producer, engineer, mixer......and mastering. While many of us can perform many of these different functions - its helpful if clients understand how much value their being given.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Production/Songwriting/Mixing

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Mahalia, J.Cole, CleoSol, NipseyHussle(R.I.P.), SnohAlegra, KendrickLamar, SummerWalker, KianaLede, Kehlani, Khalid These artists are among SOME of those who represent the next wave of greatness. There's been many before them - but these are actually realistic possibilities I can connect with.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Instrument sound choice is critical - especially in rapidly changing genres

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: -Strong Artistic knowledge of the unique characteristics of the Urban/Pop Genre and the technical ability to deliver "Hit Sounding" Records. I dont try to do everything - its a waste of time to attempt being great at everything!

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: -Track production for a specific song concept which has been sent (or explained during in person initial meeting) along with lyric sheet and/or Reference Trks - Lyric writing if requested - Mixing

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: R&B|Soul, UrbanPop, Rap

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Quincy Jones Bryan Michael Cox James Brown the Dream Gamble & Huff Dr. Dre Isaac Hayes Kanye West No I.D. Curtis Mayfield Scott Storch Barry White Salaam Remi R. Kelly Che Pope Pharell Prince Bruce Swedien Manny Marroquin

  29. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  30. A: If I choose to take on a project, its because I truly believe the project, and I, are a good fit, and that I can add value to the song, mix, lyrics, etc. So, I push myself on every project to outdo the last. Im proud of every Production and Mix I deliver.

  32. A: Honestly, most of the providers seem solid to me.

  33. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  35. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  36. A: Theres nothing I dont like about it. Its LOVE!

  37. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  38. A: What do you want to sound like, what do you listen to, who are you as an artist and where exactly is your passion, do you have some specific reference songs as examples.

  39. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  40. A: Feel free to discuss everything on your mind concerning how you want your music to sound and the direction you want to go in - because you should! I welcome all comments and encourage references as guides.
