Interview with Gordon Kuba
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Very proud of my time at Blackbird Studios. It was an amazing experience to be there and record a few tracks in such a legendary space.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Pop-rock tracks for a well-known songwriter using an e-kit.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It always depends on the situation!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: A professional that will work with you for what YOU want.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Making music that uplifts people and gives color to the world.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Hitting harder isn't always louder. Knowing how to play gets the best sound.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What kind of sound are you looking for? Are you confident in what you want?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Go for what YOU want and what YOU hear, not what looks the best or who charges the most.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Other than a drum kit??? SM57, MD421, AKG112, C214, and a comfy studio chair.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: 15 years of nonstop music, there is no end in sight!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Strong, solid, and dependable.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I feel Stevie Wonder would be able to teach me the most about music and what to bring to a song.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Consistency!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock and Jazz, but lately I have been working on Pop songs through programmed drums.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My confidence and my ability to nail a take in one go.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring what is exactly needed for the song. I try to think as a musician and not just a drummer when I come up with my parts.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Learning the music is always the first step. From there, I start playing along to create my parts and solidify what I will play. And then we record.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My grandfather, who was the original drummer for Bill Haley and his Comets, is my biggest influence. He did not stop until he was 95. I also have huge admiration for drummers like Dave Grohl, John Bonham, Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, and many others.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do mostly session work on site or from home, usually rock, jazz, or pop.
