Amelia Ray on SoundBetter

"Amelia Ray is the Beatles' long-lost soul sister." - pianist, organist and songwriter Rob Bargad

My bold exploitation of harmonies and time signatures set me apart from the crowd. As a multilingual songwriter and arranger, I have spent decades examining how similar concepts are expressed differently across languages and cultures. This research has infiltrated my composition work, which includes dozens of cross-genre albums, singles, video projects and film scores. Among my latest compositions is "Hands in Hearts," a song that spawned Europe for Ukraine – an initiative to gather musicians from 50 European countries to record a "We Are the World"-like anthem in support of Ukraine.

In addition to songwriting and arranging, I also create jingles, song parodies and mashups.

I am adventurous and love giving clients a little something extra and unexpected in my deliverables.

I look forward to working with you,
Amelia Ray

Amelia is a pleasure to work with. She is extremely talented and is very articulate in conveying what he is trying to accomplish, while being uniquely open to creative ideas. She is very easy to work with and a very nice Lady. I enjoyed our project and look forward to collaborating with her again.

Interview with Amelia Ray

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I really love my arrangement of "To Turn You On" for Burning Sky Records' Take Refuge In Pleasure: The Songs of Roxy Music Revisited. I sang and performed all of the instruments with the exception of the bass and trumpet. "To Turn You On" has always been a favourite song of mine, and it was a pleasure to convert the sweet ballad into an upbeat rumba.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I always listen to the client.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I love being a mad scientist.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: I like to know what sort of films they watch, where they like to travel, and what their hobbies and favourite foods are.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Expect the unexpected.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: A guitar and four packs of strings

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I started writing songs in elementary school and released my first album at 16. I began seriously studying arranging in 2000, when I began working with cover bands and choirs.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Adventurous

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: I would love to build sonic stories with Tommy Sims, a masterful songwriter capable of creating lush scenery with his arrangements.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Pop rock

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: I have an impeccable ear.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: Songwriting and arranging are forms of storytelling. Each element of the lyrics, melody and instrumentation represents a character, and each character has a role to play in conveying the theme, the story. The slightest change in character affects how the story is interpreted. I revel in this experimentation when approaching songwriting and arranging, ever remembering that there is always more than one way to tell a story.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Kevin Reeves, Eleven, Tommy Sims

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: I write lyrics and music, and make new arrangements of pre-existing songs.
