Interview with Jessie Lynn Toups
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been making music professionally for fifteen years. I started playing in boutiques and coffee shops in my home town. Then I started touring wineries. I got a vocal performance and music business degree from Belmont University in Nashville TN. After graduating I worked for a cruise line for a few years singing six nights a week to people from all over the world. When I moved back on land I started pursuing my own songwriting even more diligently. I currently record and tour my own original music. I also play corporate events all over the country and provide music for weddings and parties. And now I have my home studio that I also work out of. I've been doing studio work for ten years singing for demos and jingles and all kinds of projects. It's been wonderful to continue to pursue that work in my own backyard. Any time I'm not on tour, you can find me behind the mic at home. Huge thanks to Soundbetter for making this work abundant.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My roots are in country music and I typically get hired for country and bluegrass projects. But I also listen to a lot of pop music and can fit into the singer/songwriter genre very easily.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to work pretty quickly and I appreciate a client who isn't afraid to tell me exactly what they want. I like to confirm all the lyrics and lay down the lead vocal, once that is approved I'll go in and add all the harmony and ad lib tracks. I like to make sure we're on a solid foundation before we build up.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I built my own home studio out of an old shipping container! It was quite the project but I love working out here now. I built custom sound panels and love being surrounded by my instruments. It's the perfect space to write songs and create art.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love your classic country voices. I take after LeeAnn Womack, a bit of Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, and Jewel. I also love throwing in some extra sass when the song calls for it!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common job I get hired for is lead demo vocals. I also love adding harmony tracks to my own demos or preexisting leads. I also do quite a bit of custom songwriting for brands and individuals.
