I know him from six or seven years, I ve worked with him in different situation live and in the studio. The quality of the final result and the attention to the artist's needs is the reason why I decided to record also my original instrumental music with Federico as sound engineer and co producer

I recorded acoustic guitars at PFL studio.
Federico is a very pleasant person, with great technical skills and the ability to make people feel comfortable. Moreover, Federico is capable of listening and giving the right advice at the right time.
The result of the recording was excellent, as well as the mix. Recommended.

Federico is an attentive professional who has been operating in the music production for over 20 years. His studio is among the most avant-garde in Lombardy and in addition to having become a point of reference for musicians in the area, it represents a safe haven for international artists. His taste and his musical sensitivity combine with a technique and a rare preparation in this environment. The spearhead of the studio is also the availability of Vintage instrumentation and the care in taking acoustic sounds. Vote 10! Marco Moraca - NUOVE PROSPETTE and FIBRILLAZIONE ATRIALE

Interview with PFL studio

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: 1. MacBook Pro 2. MOTU Digital Performer 3. Waves plugins 4. Samson SR 850 headphones (yes, 50€...) 5. I know, it is obvious: my ears :-)

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: "I would like a warm/analog sound, etc... What do you use to mix?" Nowadays... who cares? The important thing is the result. It's not the gear... You know what I mean.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: Tell me as best as you can the sound that's in your mind and we will reach the result easily.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: Sometimes my way of mixing is considered too surgical. But I prefer starting from a "perfect" sound, having the possibility of getting it dirty later.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: At what sound do you inspire to? Give me some examples.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: 1 Listen 2 Perceive the emotions 3 Analyze the content 4 Figure out which is the more functional modus operandi

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Rock, folk, blues, americana, pop, etc… But I also do metal, punk, dance and rap/hip hop occasionally.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Musicians: Jack White, Loreena McKennitt, Robert Plant. Sound Engineer/Producer: Vance Powell, Rick Rubin, Andrew Scheps, T Bone Burnett.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I record, mix and master, edit, arrange and produce.

  19. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  20. A: Digital for total recall (it happens, after YEARS!) and for portability.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I founded PFL studio in 2000. I started recording my own stuff, then I began recording and mixing artists and bands. The next step was putting my ideas in others' music so I developed this skill co-producing a lot of albums and singles.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Understanding to the goal and contextualizing the sound.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: Having an approach as a producer (not only as a mixing/mastering engineer), if I'm inspired and I have feelings and emotions to put on a project I’m always glad to share my ideas.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: I mix and master ITB with MOTU Digital Performer on OSX, using high end plugins such as Acustica Audio, Waves, FabFilter, OekSound, PluginAlliance, Overloud, iZotope, Sound Radix and many others.

  29. Q: How would you describe your style?

  30. A: Technically speaking, I have a fairly classic approach to the mix, but I tend to add my personal touch, that is the result of my experience.

  31. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  32. A: I always propose a “demo” of the mix: you send me the project, I mix then I send you an mp3, you listen and if you like it we proceed with the mix. Wanna give a try? ;-)

  33. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  34. A: Moreno Delsignore - Risveglio I co-produced, arranged, recorded, mixed and mastered.

  35. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  36. A: Mixing and mastering various stuff.

  37. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  38. A: Creativity, even if I'm only mixing. If I'm producing I like experimenting.

  39. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  40. A: Less is more: good ideas, minimal arrangements, don't overproduce.
