Dwan "SoniiQ" Lowe on SoundBetter

Working to get the best music possible should always be priority. As an artist I would assume that is what the goal is every time. It's a lot of different engineers out there that are great at what they do. I may know and also enjoy their work personally! But will they care about what you looking to achieve? Every time?

As far as music is concerned I work tediously on the details. Focusing on what is going to bring out the life in the song with out having to do "too much' too it. Every track should have a feeling of fullness to them. That's what I offer through my services. And the best part about working with me is my willingness to "get it right" for my clients! Acting as an extension or helping hand is my usual approach to every track with every artist.

Interview with Dwan "SoniiQ" Lowe

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on a project for an artist name MVLIK WILL sometime ago and I really didn't think he would put it out but i enjoyed it because I know him personally and to hear the growth on both our ends was dope to me. Its Called MVLIKWILL VOL 1 I believe. That was 2 years ago though so we've both gotten better since then.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now I am part of a studio/Label going by the name of LF ran by another engineer/artist by the name of Kritical. We are, along with artist going by the name King Villz, Esco Jones, Teezy, Sevio, Iam3am (feature), Stan Stan, and some others are doing a quarantine project (TBD) coming soon. Its in the works now.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Hopefully I can meet some of them to recommend lol

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I prefer digital. Im not really a fan of analog. idk if im supposed to say that or not.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To always work to get the best product we can make.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Getting to hear different peoples music lol.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "Are you going to mix it and stuff?" Yes lol..... yes I will mix it I promise

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Um I haven't really heard anything.... yet at least.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are you looking to get out of our first interaction? Are you looking for a long term artist engineer relationship?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Just be transparent at every step through the process. Don't lie about liking something if you don't like it. We can figure out a resolution.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Idk what I would take because how would I get power?

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I Kinda of stumbled across this after high school and never really let go of it. Im currently back in full sail for the degree right now.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Dark, Ominous, ambient.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with 40 from OVO or Mike Dean. And Travis......... And Drake..... and everyone else lol

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Pay attention to how the music you are trying to emulate is made. If I like Summer walkers music and I'm someone who draws from her, I would probably spend some time listening to how her music is put together.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: R&B and Hip Hop But I want to venture into different genres. I just haven't came across any clients yet.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill set is the ability to listen but not to the music to the artist and curiosity. Sometimes the artist is wanting something but they can't find the words or really describe it well. But once its brought up I can't really let it go so I spend my spare time looking to see what the artist was trying to pull out of their head.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I think I add flavor. Spice if you will (haha).

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Recording I try to keep it private session so the Artist can be most comfortable. That way we can really focus on vocal performance. Mixing I try to rely more on carving out bad frequencies and balancing to get a better mix over all at the end. Mastering I just want to bring out as much as I can with as little as possible

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: At home I Have A Saffire pro 40 interface, audio technica mics, Presonus Eris E5. Waves plugins, Slate digital stuff.. At the studio it's pretty much the same out side of the Apollo interface.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I draw heavy from partynextdoor and R&B in general. But of course I'm inspired from Rap music as well. Nipsey Hussle being the biggest for me in rap. Along side Drake

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Recording if its possible, Mixing mastering, vocal comping, Editing, etc etc
