Interview with Rory Hope
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am super proud of every project that comes through here as I give 110%. However one that stands out is working on the vocals for GRLSKOUT and her original work. She sent me the nicest voice note message regarding how happy she was with the work I did and that she used my mix of the vocals I did which was the first time I can say I assisted with 'producing'. She's doing some unbelievable things, all over the world performing with the likes of Diplo and David Guetta... so I am eagerly anticipating her solo works!!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently working on my first solo EP and its so so close!! Check out my Pop journey on @YouKnowItsRo
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Too many people. So many talented people on here to be honest with you but if I had to pick a few it would be Ruhde for production, George Gleeson for songwriting and Denny White for the full package!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Its a preference at the end of the day but they're both great options.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will assist with all levels of the process for a commercial release by assisting with pitching to my extensive label and A&R contacts.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That I get to work with so many talented musicians that just want to let the creativity side of their world out. I never believed that I would say I do music full time. Here we are.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: - Can you do this for tomorrow? Absolutely! But there will be a slight price increase for putting it ahead of the queue. - Could you send me a demo before I go ahead and use you for the work? Unfortunately not, I don't allow this to be the case because again I could write half a topline and record a scratch vocal for you to say no and move onto another user with the same idea.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it’s easy, everything quality takes time and lots of work... Creating different ideas and fitting those ideas with lyrical weight could take hours or even days in some cases.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What song or artist has inspired your track? Any references that you'd like me to follow? When do you need it done by?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Trust the process and be as honest as possible. Communication is key when doing this sort of thing as I am sure everyone on here genuinely want the best for their clients! Don't be worried to offend the person if there is something you're not sure on etc, speak your mind. Have been in so many session where people just agree with whats been said for whatever reason and then you could end up with a final project that you don't absolutely love.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: - Macbook Pro (has to be done) - iPhone for use on walks to record melodies and ideas whilst hunting for food/building rafts etc. - Neumann TLM 102 would be my personal choice but would pick up wind and island noises too easily so would have to take the Shure SM7B to help minimise bleed - Apollo Twin X USB Input - Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have had a very weird career path. Used to play basketball at a semi-pro level along side being a classic car sales specialist at and auction house for 5 years, that was my life until injury. Couldn't play to the same intensity but was offered the chance to coach basketball in New York state so jumped at the opportunity and there discovered my love for music. Came back from the states with a new passion and a new focus, that was back in 2012 and I have done nothing but music for the last 10 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Very varied as I can adapt to various styles and genre's of music! Let me know what you're down for and let's work!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Lauv, Bazzi, The Weeknd, Post Malone, Jared Leto or Jon Bellion
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more. Don't over complicate the mix, let everything have a reason to be in the track. Let it breathe!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: EDM/Slaphouse and just dance tunes in general really! I love all rock and pop though!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Creating toplines and singing I would say. I have worked with so many different genre's that usually my first melodic idea is the best one as the feeling takes over for the track.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Modern and fun melodies that are unique to any new track and my voice. I have a unique voice so if you want this sound, you won't find it anywhere else!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: To be honest it really matters on the clients needs/demands. I am very flexible and very often change my plans to accomodate.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is located in Manchester (UK). Fully sound treated with brands such as Adams Audio, UAD, Neumann and more.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The artists that inspire me range dramatically... From being brought up listening to both my mums and dads completely different tastes game me a varied love for different genres and styles. Vocal tone and melodies are what really stand out to me and it doesn't matter the vibe! From the likes of ACDC and Led Zeppelin from my dad's music taste and Celine Dion and Will Young from my mum's side I got to experience them and was hungry to learn/hear more in the world of music. I find myself listening to bands like Thirty Seconds to Mars and Nothing But Thieves mostly and believe thats where the grittiness of Jared's vocal shines through in my performance and the incredible falsetto/power delivery from Conor Mason are so inspiring when it comes to tone. Lyrics and songwriting from the likes of Lauv and Post Malone I cannot get enough of, the list lasts forever but ultimately these are the artists that I would like to be, musically the love child of. Producers such as Timbaland inspire me really as I indirectly listened to tracks produced by him without actually knowing that was the case until I was much older and working for music as a career! A producer that I currently am enjoying though is Fred Again... What a guy!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My area of expertise is toplining and recording the song for my clients instrumental. I can optimise my style of singing/tone to fit the references or vibe that the client requests for the genre of song they want. Wether its a bigger pop commercial vocal like Harry Styles/Justin Timberlake to the more subtle delivery of Jeremy Zucker or Conan Gray.
