Jonathan is an exceptionally talented vocalist; it is obvious that he spent time at Berklee. Imagine a unique Scottish tonality, with a voice that in its natural octave sounds like a fusion of Michael Jackson and Bruno Mars in a kilt. I don’t know if he can dance like those guys though, but his voice sure is on par. A pleasure to work with - he takes directions and interprets them well.

Just received another beautiful piece of work from Jonathan. I sent over a very old song of mine, and what I got back was a hip, updated version that is nothing short of fantastic!

Interview with Jonathan Carr

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I promise to deliver you a world class product in a short time frame.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: I prefer to have a zoom or FaceTime call and to have them tell me what their vision is. Any audio references they have are always appreciated.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: Studied at Berklee and worked with John Mayer and Timbaland's production team. Moved to France and toured the world for 2 years. Spent 5 years in London as a session musician and also signed a record deal as a songwriter. Now I perform globally and work with artists and writers as a session musician and vocalist.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: Musicality.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: Having been a songwriter myself I have an instinct for what fits in a particular piece of music. It could be just the right piano part, or the right approach and intensity to the vocals. I have a strong musicality that I can bring to other artist's work and my voice has been popular on recorded works for it's rich pop tone.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: I like to listen to the song 4/5 times and really bed it in. By this point I'd have spoken to the client and got a real sense for their vision for the track then I work on it until it's perfect. I have really high standards so I make sure everything is done efficiently, professionally and with the utmost musicality.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I have a Yamaha GC1 grand piano (5 months old). I use a pair of RODE M5 Condensor microphones to mic the piano. For Vocals I use a RODE NT1-A. I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface and Logic Pro. My studio speakers are Monitor Audio Bronze 2.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I have a very eclectic taste in music, from pop to classical, hip hop to soul and Motown...A small selection of my favourite artists are: Bernhoft ELO Supertramp Ariana Grande John Mayer Donny Hathaway

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: My work for clients splits into two instruments - piano and voice. For piano recording, I have a Yamaha Grand Piano at home with high quality condenser mics so I am able to record that class grand piano sound quickly and professionally for your demo or record. I also regularly do solo backing tracks for piano. For vocals I have a professional home studio to record, but really it comes down to the voice and tone and whether it's right for the record. I studied voice at Berklee and consider myself a very versatile singer and can sing pop, R'n'B, jazz, soul and EDM. I've performed around the world and have worked and featured with some of the world's biggest pop artists.
